You told us your favorite Sea Island memories. And now we share them. Ninety years of history means 90 years of stories and memories, from s’mores around the fire to family Bingo night at The Cloister. Enjoy this trip down memory lane.
Huntersville, NCMy wedding!!!!!! My husband and I were married in the Sea Island Chapel and the entire day was magical. From check in to check out, the Sea Island Staff was on point making sure our entire stay was flawless. We have been back multiple times since and every time, we are always treated like celebrities. Even after the big day, many of our wedding guests have planned trips back down to Sea Island because they had that much fun! If I could live in The Cloister I would.
Birmingham, ALFor the first 25 years of my life, June 16th was my favorite day. This is the day our Sea Island vacation began. The next 2 weeks would be the best of my summer, most of which were spent in cottages 29 and 30 on 8th Street. The entire Bethea clan would spend 2 weeks swimming, biking, crabbing, and charging goldbrick sundaes to their magic Sea Island number. (Ask anyone in my family and we can still recite our charge numbers.) We loved jeep train rides, finding shells at the end of the Island, and chip and putt. We were such a large group that there would often multiple members of the family that won bingo in the same night. These summers and the memories (that are too numerous to count) we share are treasured by all of us.
Duluth, GASea Island brings back so many memories but the memory that stands out the most was our first family vacation. My husband and I got so brave and decided to take our quadruplets to Sea Island over forth of July. To say it was magical is an understatement. My favorite memory was the night we all got dressed up for dinner. The kids were so excited to see their mom and dad in black tie . But the look on their little faces when they saw me all dressed up was priceless. Sea island will always be our top vacation destination.
Winnetka, ILThere has never been a time in my life when Sea Island was not my favorite place in the world. Every summer, my family travels down south to stay at the Cloister, which has become a second home to us. The food, the beach, and the sun are second to none, but what makes Sea Island the most special are the people who treat us like family. I know our summer tradition will continue for many generations to come when we bring our children and grandchildren to the Cloister. Jumping for joy is what we want to do every morning...thats is, until we realize vacation is over until next summer.
Wilmington, NCMy family and I have started the tradition of staying atThe Cloisters for New Years. It’s a wonderful way to get away after the business of the holidays and just be together as a family. The staff takes such good care of us so we can relax and just be. Our children love the family party at the beach club on New Year’s Eve and the fun games and amazing food they get to try. We all stay up until midnight and watch the fireworks from the beach. The next morning, they get up and take a cold dip in the ocean at The Polar Plunge! It just doesn’t get much better than that! We look forward to returning every year and love making these sweet memories in beautiful Sea Island.
West Palm Beach, FLI recently made a new favorite memory at the Beach Club. The rains came heavy and I had to retreat under the overhang. The storm passed and took with it the winds needed for the Skipper to sail our Hobie Cat. We waited out the windless sea. Finally the winds returned and we sailed for a bit in the slow wind. Sailed into a dead calm. Nothing. No wind. The crew was deciding to deploy the Jet Ski to pull us back in...and I jokingly said just bring Pina Coladas. The Jet Ski came and so did the Pina Coladas (Virgin that is!) !! What a treat & somehow the Jet Ski brought with it the winds, and we were able to Sail on! Thanks to all the crew for a fun and memorable trip! This Rainbow appeared over the water sports hut the next morning!
Carrollton, TXA number of years ago I traveled to Sea Island and stayed at The Cloister. I was there to conduct a signing session of items with Davis Love III to be offered for sale in the PGA Tour gift catalog and other places. Prior to arriving his agent asked if I wanted to play golf, which, of course I did! I drove in after dark, which in itself was interesting seeing trees like I'd never seen before. I spent a couple of hours with Davis, one of the nicest and most well spoken athletes I had ever met. He asked if I was set for golf that afternoon and I said yes. I later went in to the pro shop and the pro behind the counter said, "Oh your Davis's friend! I said, I am now!!" I had a great round of golf - and created a lifelong memory.
Mount Pleasant, SCMy now husband and I went to Sea Island for our honeymoon. Staying at The Cloister completely blew away our expectations. The customer service and attention to detail was incredible, even down to anticipating when I needed more milk for my coffee without me having to ask. We lucked out with amazing weather at the end of February to explore the property and the beach, and every corner was gorgeous! We ended our trip with an amazing meal listening to a bagpiper on the golf course. Truly an unforgettable experience. We’ve already decided that this will be our anniversary spot as well!
Jacksonville, FLSea Island will always mean a lot to me because my favorite golfer, Davis Love III lives there. My son is also named after this golfing great. I was fortunate enough to spend my 5th year wedding anniversary in St. Simons and was able to play a round of golf with my wife on the Retreat course. Even though we weren’t able to stay at this beautiful resort at the time, I would love the opportunity to stay there and experience all the resort encompasses.
Thomaston, CTWhen I close my eyes and I think of my visits to Sea Island, I smile. I smile with joy because every time that I have visited, it has been with loved ones. I have been there with my mother and sister and had a glass of wine in the beautiful lobby of the Cloisters. We looked in awe at the gorgeously decorated Christmas tree and listened to holiday carols. We even played bingo in the ballroom and laughed at the sheer fun of the evening. What these memories give me is the desire to do this trip with my two daughters. I want them to have these wonderful memories too.
Wyckoff, NJBingo with Big George of course! Growing up with multiple trips made to Sea Island each and every year, Big George became a staple of our vacation. His smile was enough to illuminate the whole island. He made bingo a giant affair and was responsible for creating memories my family and I will never forget and cherish forever. Knowing it was Thursday was so thrilling just because it was Bingo night and occassionally George would join me and my cousins out on the dancefloor afterwards. Still seeing familiar faces around the property is one of the many reasons why my family and I love Sea Island so much and feel right at home. Thank you George!!!
Franklin, WIOur love for Sea Island started years ago with my father. Known as BunkerBob to so many. Born in Chicago the same year sea island was formed, in 1928. Both turning 90! These two have plenty in common. They are truly one of a kind, beautiful and loved by so many. His song: “Just a little bit east of Brunswick a short way out to sea there lies a bit of paradise which will always be home for me. It’s covered with birds and flowers and surrounded by stormy seas. It’s long and it’s thin and there’s a bit of the wind on the island by the sea. The tides roll in and the tides roll out, the people check in and the people check out, but never you and me. For this is our home and we will never roam, from the island by the sea.” Robert T. Mangan 1974
Atlanta, GAIt began the summer we turned 21, our courtship sparked under the Sea Island sun. As wedding plans were made, there was only 1 choice for the 1987 honeymoon affair, River House, Sunday seafood buffet and oh, we were the final bingo winning pair! Every summer our extended families gathered and new friends were made, Junior camps, cookie cutters, gold bricks and 4th of July parades. As the years passed, the tides and the kids grew, A future husband was met under fireworks and another wedding ensued! 25 years later an anniversary at The Lodge was celebrated, we sat back and reminisced on all the memories created. We cannot imagine a summer without SEA ISLAND, It's the continuation of a family tradition that keeps us smiling!
Warner Robins, GASeveral years ago my brothers and I had a brothers weekend at Sea Island. We played both the Sea Side Course as well as the Plantation Course. Not only was the golf great with amazing views, but the service we received was impeccable. The food was delicious and the accommodations were incredible. We wanted to make it a yearly trip, but we were unable to sync our schedules in order to make another trip happen. Sadly, one of my brothers passed away in December of 2017. While we will never be able to have a brother's trip with all of us together we do have some incredible memories that were created there at Sea Island and I am forever grateful for those memories.
Buffalo, NYEven though my family lives at the Beach Club when we go to Sea Island, none of us ever wanted to go in the "cold pool" at the old Beach Club. Even for New Yorkers, it was usually too cold. One year, our daughter Laura got it into her head that she wanted to learn how to do a backflip off the diving board. One of the ever patient Sea Island lifeguards spent a few minutes helping her and before we knew it she'd taught Laura how to do a backflip. Laura spent the rest of the trip perfecting her dive in that freezing cold pool having the time of her life. She went on to become a championship diver back home - all thanks to Sea Island! Luckily, we caught a picture of the first time she nailed it in the diving pool at the old Beach Club.
Charlotte, NCWe came to Sea Island for our second visit in July. This was an important trip as it was suddenly our only family vacation for the summer due to the fact that my husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer on May 31st. We were able to stay for 4 nights in the Fernandina Suite at the Cloister and enjoy a post-colon surgery/pre-chemo trip. We took full advantage of the amenities and enjoyed the pool, spa, stables, and fishing. My husband and I also shared a lot of tears on the veranda overlooking the river at night. The trip was bittersweet. We were having a blast but we knew our lives would change when we returned home. Sea Island and the Cloister is one of our favorite places. We look forward to making a cancer free victory trip back!
Buffalo, NYWhen my kids were little, we'd get up, head down to the Beach Club and spend the day digging holes, jumping waves and occasionally relaxing. Our boys would usually fall asleep on the walk back home along the beach. One day, Bobby was awake and got all excited when he saw a yellow stuffed duck with a fleece blanket body laying in the sand. He wanted to take it home but I said it belonged to someone and they may be looking for it. Everyday, he'd run out to see if the duck was there. Days passed and the duck was still unclaimed, covered in sand, smelly and dirtier than ever. We took him home, washed him up and he was just like new. That night Bob had his Easter picture taken on the table in the Cloister Lobby with his new best friend, Duckie.
McLean, VA15 years I’ve been coming to the place that has seen me at my worst and best. They’ve seen me grow up and have sparked the independent, spunky 15-year-old I am today. I could just tell an ordinary memory, but have decided to tell a story that falls deep in my heart. I was born with a whole in my heart and that summer, while ten years old, had to have open heart surgery. While I was leaving, I came to say good bye to the counselors of camp cloisters that became my dear friends, but they had a surprise in store for me. They had decorated a Sea Island bag and filled it with toys, coloring books and things that would help while I was in the hospital. Thinking about this story always brings me back to the good ‘ol days growing up at Sea Island.
Frisco, TXWe had been once before in 2011. My husband, me, our 2 year old son, my folks & my brother. To say we fell in love would be the biggest understatement of the century. We promised ourselves we would return as often as we could, but naturally life happened. I got pregnant with our second which we sadly lost, my brother found his amazing future wife and we couldn’t make it the following summer... or the next. By Sept 2013, we all agreed it was time to book our next S.I. adventure for July 2014. We couldn’t wait. Then out of nowhere, we learned a baby girl was on the way for us. I remember telling my mom, ‘I just want her to get here, be healthy and be next to me on the beach...’ And before you knew it, she was...Baby Brooke @ 12 weeks.
Houston, TXTennis, tennis and more tennis! If I wasn’t in tennis clinics, I spent a lot of time watching my father, Mike Mills, play the game he loved so much. He played twice a day some days. Also organized tournaments with his large group of friends who would meet up in Sea Island every summer (Month of July) . They even created their own trophies and called it the “Sea Island Cup”. My dad passed away almost 9 years ago. I’m entering this memory and photo in his honor. The year was 1979 and my father (in yellow shorts) is pictured with one of his best friends, Charlie. Sea Island was such a special place to him and our family. And Sea Island tennis was one of his best times.
Bernardsville, NJThe Plantation Supper as we now know it used to be known as the “Fish Fry” and my favorite memory when we were kids....when it was held up on the beach north of 36th street, the current site of Ocean Forest. My memories are clear as day....a rustic setting, the wonderful southern music, hush puppies, and wandering free through the greenery and shrubbery..and of course, the Jeep train! I am a third generation Sea Island cottage owner, currently sharing the magic with our children, the fourth McBride generation!!
Watkinsville, GAMy parents honeymooned at The Cloister back in the late 70’s, and I can often remember them taking weekend getaways there as well. They love to talk about what they refer to as “The Old Cloister” and how there were no TVs in the rooms! They remember the attention to details Sea Island offers, like how everyone used to gather around the fireplace at night for milk and cookies. So naturally, when my husband and I were searching for an anniversary trip destination or weekend getaway, we chose Sea Island. It has always exceeded expectations and it’s fun to compare memories with my parents! We love the idea of keeping tradition. We would like to add a family trip with our boys sooner than later in hopes they will love it like we do!
Atlanta, GAMy husband, Ed, and I grew up vacationing on Sea Island. Our love for Sea Island led us to The Cloister in 1978 for our honeymoon! This year we are celebrating our FORTIETH wedding anniversary and are returning to The Cloister to celebrate! We always love to look in the “honeymoon” albums in The Cloister for our picture! We brought are children to Sea Island to vacation. Now the children have their own children and we still return to Sea Island with multigenerations. Ed and I are blessed with wonderful memories of Sea Island as children, teenagers, young adults, parents and now grandchildren! Happy Birthday Sea Island!
Chicago, ILIt started with Mom & Dad went on a trip in 1972 with friends one year. As our family grew we continued to share in the island life with our family each April. A long road trip from Olympia Fields, IL. to Sea Island, GA. but once we hit the Frederica River Bridge onto St. Simons Island we knew we were close. My favorite thing to keep repeating to my parents is "Are we there yet" even today we still laugh about my excitement. A month stay at Cottage #69 in April for Easter. Close to the beach/pool. Flying kits with my siblings to see who's would go up the highest. Going down the the pier to catch crabs for dinner- so fun!, Finding treasures on the beach in sea life. Bike rides up/down the path, looking at all the beauty of the island.
Clermont, FLIt’s hard to choose just one favorite memory from my stays at Sea Island but I think I’d have to choose most recently celebrating my 16th wedding Anniversary at The Lodge. My husband and I have traveled many places over the years but Sea Island is honestly a place we hold very close to our hearts. We just love all the details and sincerity the employees show when we visit, it just feels like home. This year we had the most delicious dinner at Colt & Allison where we sat at a table covered in rose petals. Our waiter was outstanding and even made me the best Old Fashioned I’ve ever had. I’m already dreaming about our next visit!
Willowbrook, ILMy first trip to Sea Island was in 1958 as a young child with my family. We stayed in the River House. It was love at first sight for all of us! We returned each year. When I was married in 1970 my husband and I traveled to the Cloister to spend our honeymoon! The following year my husband was a server during the summer at the Cloister! We were expecting our first child at that time too. When it was time to go to the hospital Howard Jones told us to call him and he would escort us to Glynn Memorial Hospital as he was a volunteer fireman! Howard sat in the waiting room with my husband until our first baby girl was born! Since that year we have come back each year with our entire family.... now 4 married children and almost 10 grandchildren!
Savannah, GASea Island is a place of wonder for all ages. I remember celebrating a rather warm Thanksgiving on Sea Island. My maternal great-grandparents, grandma, parents, siblings, cousins, aunt, and uncle were all there. We decided to go boogie boarding since it was so warm, and my great-grandfather joined us! I also remember the kind staff members that knew my paternal great-grandmother because she had taught them back in the day. You feel like family at Sea Island. To this day I have cherished these memories which were made possible thanks to the variety of activities for a variety of generations that Sea Island provides.
Houston, TXEating/Charging at the beach club -the old beach club. And yes, Big George was there. I still remember our charge account number, 136##. We wrote our order with the short green pencils on the long charge cards. When we returned home to Mississippi after a month in Sea Island, my siblings and I waited with great anxiety for the “shoe box” of charge cards to arrive. Our father would separate them out by each family member to see who had the most charges. The older and smarter we got (so we thought) we figured we could sign another siblings name to make their stack bigger. I think our dad was on to us. I can still picture Big George in the Grill. And I now enjoy seeing him welcome everyone to the new Beach Club.
Tuscaloosa, ALSea Island is celebrating 90 years this year, we will be celebrating as well--this year marks our 40th wedding anniversary, and throughout this, Sea Island has played a significant part in this. It began with our honeymoon in 1978, and we returned 10 years later in 1988 to celebrate the anniversary, returning for the next two years following. We came back again to celebrate our 25th year in 2003. And our most recent visit was last year--and though it was cold and rainy, The Cloister has always been a special place for us. We've brought our son, who learned good manners and the pleasures of a great meal. We shared it with others, too. As we celebrate our milestone this year, Sea Island will be part of our thoughts.
Washington, DCMy favorite memory is when we bought a house here because this place is so so special to me, friends, and my family.
Washington, DCOur family is very small, but our Sea Island Family is large. One year we decided to spend the days leading up to Christmas with Santa and all his elves, including Scott, Blair, Brendan, Jessica, Bill, Jackie, Tim, Ryan, David, and of course the friendliest elf, Mr. Bruce! The Alice in Wonderland characters, incredible gingerbread house and all of the fabulous decorations made us feel like we were part of something big (or tiny, if you peeked through the looking glass) and wonderful. It was one of the most special Christmases we've ever enjoyed. Thank you!
Bodega Bay, CAI know every wedding at Sea Island is special. With Sea Island as the backdrop, how can they not be? My wedding day, though, was a miracle. Just 6 weeks before, I was diagnosed with cancer. This wedding saved my life. Our wedding on Sea Island, surrounded by our closest friends and family, sustained me and my new husband for months and years to come. From the first moment we arrived at The Lodge, the Sea Island staff (family) created the most special and unique environment. The memory of our day gave us a respite from the chaos and pain that was to come in our first year of marriage. A touch point that we could close our eyes and remember to escape to. There are not enough words to describe how beautiful that weekend was!
Sullivans Island, SCMy parents- who’d vacationed many times at The Cloister- “finally” took along me and my many younger siblings in the mid-1990s, when I was a teenager. In those years, I often opted out of family travel, preferring to spend the weekends at home with my friends. However, The Cloister was the perfect place for a teenager! I fondly remember hanging out at the Beach Club: it was a place I could experience some independence on a big family trip. I have since vacationed at The Cloister with my husband, and we just brought along our two young children. We feel confident they will keep wanting to return with us- even when they are teenagers!
Vienna, VAMemories…so many so I guess I should start at the beginning. Elena and I went to a business meeting there in 1978 and have been returning there almost every year since, sometimes at least twice a year. Granted the physical appearance has dramatically changed but the same friendly, smiling faces still greet you wherever you are on the property. We returned the next year with our son and daughter and began a family tradition that is as strong today as it was 40 years ago. Our son’s 3 children started another link of going to the Cloister every summer (they still refer to it by the old name.) almost as soon as they were born. What memories do they have: getting dressed up for dinner every night, having our photos taken in the lobby and the dining experience. They learned the small bowl of warm water was for washing their fingers , the device that snared olives from the relish tray (we have one at home for special family dinners), and the desserts as much as they wanted. Sherry Taylor always offered M&Ms to close out the dinner. Ask them about Bingo and their eyes light up; they fully expected to win a pile of money but, alas they never won and in fact none of us has ever won any Bingo game! The old Beach Club was another family favorite especially for its ice cream station. Emma, our oldest granddaughter might have passed up lunch if allowed because the peppermint ice cream covered with chocolate and sprinkles definitely was more nutritious than anything on the menu. I also have special memories of Sea Island because I hosted a series of Business Conferences either in the Spring or Fall. I saw the same professionalism and attention to detail on those visits as I did when vacationing there in the summer. I recall with amusement at a Conference which David Brinkley was the guest speaker and asked the waiter for a cup of coffee, he was asked if preferred decaf or regular and Brinkley responded “drinking decaf is like drinking Scotch without alcohol” and the nonplussed waiter deadpanned ,”regular coffee coming up.” One more lasting memory did not occur at Sea Island but was inspired by it: dinner hosted by our three grandchildren and their parents, following our return home. Three performed as wait staff, complete with a napkin draped over their arm, taking orders from a hand written menu, serving us dinner and dessert. The table setting include the signature Cloister finger bowl (not “borrowed” from the dining room) but a local selection, relish tray, with the olive pincer, coffee and dessert. This was their way of saying thanks to Nonna and Pap for their summer vacation and one memory that we will never forget. To try and summarize 40 years of memories is obviously very difficult because there are so many but we tried this recent June to resurrect them and create new ones. We rented a cottage and our expanded family, minus our youngest granddaughter who is with the Peace Corps in Ghana, Africa. Our daughter flew in from Houston and joined her fiancé from Charlotte who visited the Island for the first time, our son and his lady friend (her first visit also), our granddaughter Emma (still likes Ice cream) newly married to Jon, and our grandson Joseph with his girl friend, Keleigh (another first timer) Special note: Emma and Jon who were married this past April because of work commitments couldn’t go away for a honeymoon so this week was, in effect, their honeymoon shared with 8 others. No problem. We celebrated 40 years of visiting Sea Island, and we celebrated my 80th birthday. How lucky can you be? We also started another tradition: our own Bingo night. Unfortunately, there was no Bingo that week. When I expressed my disappointment, Scott Steilin, true to Sea Island tradition sent a supply of Bingo cards, a machine for the numbers and a “cheat Sheet” of expressions use on Bingo night, such as “66..Clickity Click”, BEEEE..4” Some of the people who helped create these memories, in no particular order, are: Dulany Hall, Don Lewis, Houston Vissage Susan Ihde and her mother, Bernice Gault , Sherry Taylor, Big George and a host of others who never neglected to say, “Good morning Sir, Good evening Ma’am, Is there anything I could do for you.” Elena and I will return in August and, once more, enjoy Sea Island.
Anderson, SCIt started 1968 from Olympia Fields, Il. to Sea Island every April for a month long stay. Mom & Dad & 8 children in a van headed south 1,041 miles. Headed to our home away from home: good old cottage #69! Hop/skip away from the pool/beach. Cherry cokes; flying kites/find sand dollars on beach/bike rides. Easter Egg Hunt. Myself finding the golden egg!Horse back riding lessons, playing with the animals in the barn, bingo night at the cloister, nightly deer spotting trips down the island to see if we could spot wildlife. Upon our arriving was our Dear Ana, a long time resident of the island that would help out during our stay! Teaching how to boil crabs & sharing wonderful stories about the island life. Cherished memories of a lifetime.
Houston, TXEating/Charging at the beach club -the old beach club. And yes, Big George was there. I still remember our charge account number, 13602. And I now enjoy seeing him welcome everyone to the new Beach Club .
Mount Freedom, NJI married my husband at Broadfield! On a family trip one summer my Dad planned a trip to Sea Island. My boyfriend at the time now husband got to join us on that trip. We fished, went to the beach club, and I took a shooting lesson while my dad brother Inlaw and now husband shot which led to us going out to Broadfield and shooting. We fell in love with broadfield and almost 2 years later had a December wedding there! Now we are taking our almost 5 month old daughter to her first trip to Sea Island for the 4th of July! Sea Island is such a special place to us and we hope to continue the tradition of coming out here with our children.
Chicago, ILBeginning at the age of two, my family and I would spend at least a week at Sea Island in August each year. This was the week I looked forward to all year- not only because I was able to spend it with my family, including two cousins who I adored, but also because I got to go to my favorite place on earth. Sea Island, to me, is so much more than a resort. It’s a place where I experienced and learned so much and a place where I was able to enjoy time with my wonderful family. The majority of the memories from my childhood include Sea Island. From bingo to camp cloister to the jeep train to the old main dining room to ping pong and shuffleboard tournaments to the gazebo and the list goes on, Sea Island was (and still is) my happy place.
Los Angeles, CAI first came to Sea Island in the summer of 1991 when I was 5 weeks old. I've been lucky enough to come back at least once a year since then and reunite with friends who have become family. I don't love Sea Island because it's beautiful. I don't love Sea Island because of its sandy beaches. I don't love it because of the calm, warm ocean. I don't love it because of Billy Bingo, or the authentic Southern cuisine. I love Sea Island because it's where I met my best friends.
Dallas, TXI have been married to my favorite "Sea Island memory" for 42 years! I met my husband in Sea Island when he worked on the Junior Staff. We dated three years before marrying. The legacy continues as our eldest daughter met her husband in Sea Island as well. This special place is magical indeed. We have seven grandchildren and I feel certain that there will be some Sea Island romances sprinkled in their lives.....and some could repeat my "memory".
White Plains, GAIf only we could live every day as we live our days in Sea Island! When we’re here, we are present. *Really* present. Phone calls and demands don’t stop, but it’s much easier to feel, ‘it can wait’. What can’t wait? Watching our little ones eat sand and squeal at the waves crashing. Riding the water slide, as an adult, to relive your glory days (and realize how old you are ). Cruising on a golf cart down Sea Island Drive to be reminded slow pace is better for the heart. May we all live out our days as if they’re Sea Island days. We’ll be better for it. And live longer!
Anderson, SCMy parents began vacationing at Sea Island soon after they were married in 1986. Ever since then, my parents, brother, and I have vacationed every summer at Sea Island. My boyfriend tagged along last year for his first trip and immediately fell in love with this incredible place. It feels like home when we arrive! So many memories have been created here from Shirley Temple’s I would drink at dinner, the corn muffins and butter, finger bowls, and participating in the children’s talent show. We actually even remember the way the old building used to smell. Now we love relaxing at the beach club, shark fishing, going down the water slide, and visiting the ice cream shop every afternoon. Sea Island is the “True happiest place on earth.”
Columbus, OHI grew up with my grandparents telling adoring stories of trips to Sea Island. They were a golfing couple and loved playing down there. The family decided to surprise them with a trip and we celebrated my grandparents 55th wedding anniversary at our favorite golden isle. All the extended family, staying in a house together, bingo at The Cloister, cocktails on the beach, lots and lots of golf and boisterous group dinners. Planning my own wedding, we wanted to honor my grandparents by recreating their wedding. Same church and reception location and a honeymoon at their beloved Sea Island. My husband and I loved starting our marriage on the same fairways and beaches that brought them so much joy.
Knoxville, TNSea Island holds such special family memories for us. The moments when we just take the time to relax and forget everything else going on in the world! We love everything from the water slide, to the Shooting School, bike rides and beach walking. Of course, there are the fabulous restaurants too! In this photo we see how much our kids have changed in 5 years! Thank you Sea Island!
Nashville, TNAs a kindergartener this year, my son wrote and illustrated a book about our trips to Sea Island. We have been to Sea Island several times as a family and we have such fond memories. I think my son Reid has certainly captured our fond memories through the eyes of a 6 year old. We are schedule to come back in October for fall break. Below is the text in case is hard to read and I have scanned pictures of the book as well: Title- When I went to the Beach, Author- Reid Dale Page 1- I was going to the beach to find seashells. Page 2- I got back to the reclining chairs. Paige 3- I was swimming at the pool. Page 4- I was at the game room. Page 5- I rode my bike home. Page 6- The next day I went down to the water slide. THE END:)
Jacksonville, FLOur family’s Sea Island story began back in 1953, when my newlywed grandparents travelled from New Jersey to The Cloister to enjoy their honeymoon. As they were walking into the lobby, they held the door open for another honeymoon couple who ended up checking in first. When my grandparents checked in, they became The Cloister’s 10,000th honeymoon couple and received a free stay. For their 50th wedding anniversary, our entire family -their 6 kids and 7 grandchildren, enjoyed a wonderful week back at SI. My husband and I visit regularly with our daughters. On our last visit an employee was able to locate the 1953 Honeymoon book, filled with the signatures of all couples that honeymooned in SI that year, including my grandparents’ signatures!
Atlanta, GAI remember gathering my nerves at the Beach Club before walking north on the beach with my girlfriend before asking her to marry me. We walked for what seemed like forever before I finally found it in me to drop to one knee. I was so nervous I forgot to present the ring to her! We were sitting there on the beach and after about 5 minutes I remembered the ring was in my pocket and told her "Oh yeah! Do you want to see your ring?!" We had our honeymoon at the Cloister and have returned to Sea Island every year since. It is our favorite place and we look forward to creating new memories there in the years to come.
Buffalo, NYOne year we rented a cottage on 26th and the drive with another family One day there was a knock on the door; one of the girls from the other family answered it to a surprised couple. This couple was friends with the owner of the cottage and wanted to stop by to say hi and see the house. My mom recognized the couple and invited them in and gave them a tour of the house. Afterwards, my mom and the other family's dad sat and chatted with the couple. The man asked Mr Prince about his line of work and then Mr Prince asked about his... to which the man replied "I'm the Governor of the state of Georgia"! Yes it was Jimmy Carter! The Carters then sent for Amy to come play with all the kids in the house!
St. Simons Island, GAIn the 1960’s, under the full American Plan, guests were assigned the same table and waitress/waiter for the duration of their stay. Our table was in the main dining room, and for several visits we were fortunate to have Carmen Cross as our server. Carmen’s Irish wit paired nicely with our Italian informality and sense of fun. One evening, while she was placing finger bowls before us, one of my teenage brothers, quite full of himself and feeling very “James Bondish” in his white dinner jacket, looked with disdain at the finger bowl in front of him and then at Carmen. “What, no rose petals?” Carmen just smiled and didn’t take the bait, but the following evening, and every evening thereafter, there were rose petals in his finger bowl!
New York, NYOur wedding at Sea Island was perfect, despite some weather-related surprises along the way! The afternoon of our wedding, torrential downpours came out of nowhere. Sea Island's wedding team scrambled to move everything inside, and even (very last minute) decorated the Spanish Lounge to make it look more like a "garden", which had been our original venue. While we were saying our vows (indoors), the sun broke through the clouds and the rest of the day went off without a hitch. At the end of the night, the wedding team surprised us with the most dramatic, incredible "sparklers" (that term doesn't do them justice!!) to see us off - we couldn't believe it as they shot up from the ground right as our golf cart cruised past. We were so excited!!
Knoxville, TNMy husband and I honeymooned to Sea Island in 2016. I remember people asking me why we didn’t want to go to an all inclusive resort in the Caribbean like a lot of newlyweds do. That was an easy answer for us- Sea Island is so much more! From the impeccable service as soon as you arrive, the nothing but friendly faces you see all over the resort, to the small details that the staff notices and pays such close attention to. On our last night there, we were surprised with a dessert that was so thoughtful, and we had no idea the restaurant staff even knew we were honeymooning. WHAT. A. PLACE. We hope our marriage can embody all that Sea Island does- so warm, welcoming to all, and true service to others. We hope to be back soon!
Greenville, SCToo many fond memories of Sea Island for our family for the last 20+ years; but my FAVORITE was in July 2018 when we were there along with my brother's family to celebrate the NUMBER "5"! My nephew turned "5" and my husband turned "5-0" on our vacation! The Cloister, Lodge and Sea Island did NOT disappoint! The staff really went out of their way to help these fellas feel pretty special and they definitely made it a most memorable occasion! As a matter of fact, we are coming back this July to see if birthdays "6" and "51" for them can be equally fun! ;) With Sea Island we know it will always be PERFECT as we have celebrated many a milestone there! DREAMING of winning to help celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary this year! See ya'll soon!
Memphis, TNWe have countless Sea Island special memories over the last 15 years. One of our fondest memories definitely epitomizes what makes Sea Island so extraordinary-the service! After great family nights playing bingo, watching the bagpiper, and trips to the candy shop, we had a fun date night planned at the Georgian Room and the kids were excited to go to the kids night at the Beach Club. After a fabulous dinner the sommelier took us for a tour of the wine cellar-amazing. As we were ordering dessert we realized it was close to time for kids night pickup. Our amazing waiter had the Beach Club staff bring the kids to the Georgian Room. The Georgian Room staff gave them chef hats and aprons and had them bake cookies-fun and magical for all of us!
Plain City, OHThere were so many...from the early 1950's up to the mid-1980's... but one was documented in a Sea Island brochure from approximately 1955 or 1956. There was a picture of me and another guest on a pony ride on the beach; I still have the brochure. A ten day stay at Hamilton House was my summer vacation every two years for decades.
Spartanburg, SCOne of the strongest memories I have at Sea Island was Bingo Night in one of the clubrooms. This was back in the day when Gentlemen wore tuxedos to club functions and their ladies were dressed to the nines in evening wear including cocktail dresses and best jewelry. Bingo night was always packed with families. It was pure Theater enjoyed by all. The last card played was full coverage and the winner received the largest cash award, approx $200. Keep in mind, time period was late 50s, early 60s. Card checker was a person named Calvin and he was always called to check cards for false Bingos. That night my father was not paying attention as he should have been. My mother was playing her card as well as my Dad's. My dad won, Bingo!
Atlanta, GAWe’ve spent the past four Memorial Day weekends at Sea Island because it brings us back to iconic Americana and magically makes time slow down. Our children, now ages four and seven, look forward to finding lizards and rabbits along the pathways, riding in the super fast golf carts, and the golden chocolate coins on their pillows at bedtime. My husband and I enjoy turning off our cellphones, endless rounds of bocce ball by the water, and slow roasting marshmallows while listening to the bagpipes at the Lodge. Remembering our past and looking for the best America has to offer, Sea Island hits every note.
Columbus, GAWe honeymooned at Sea Island May 1988 - exactly 30 years ago. We loved sitting at the old beach club with the floral umbrellas over the tables and the incredible beach club buffet. The historical toured bike rides we loved as well as bingo and especially meeting new married couples and looking through all the wedding albums over the years. We have come back several times over the years but are most fond of what started our love of Sea Island in 1988.
Bowling Green, KYHorseback riding lessons every summer at the old Sea Island stables growing up!
Indianapolis, INOur family went to Sea Island every August growing up. I fished off the dock every day and we had fancy dinners every night. We loved getting dressed up! As we all grew up my sister spent her honeymoon at Sea Island and I brought my kids. When we found out our Mom had cancer we knew we needed to bring her to SI one last time. We spent her last Thanksgiving together at Sea Island and none of us will ever forget what a special time it was. Thank you for the memories!
Burlington, NCMy husband and I stayed in the River House for our honeymoon in Oct 1987! We came back for our 4th Anniversary and in 1993 my youngest daughter “Lucy “ celebrated her 1st bday! Last year was our 25 th Anniversary for our family . We will be there in August for year 26! Lucy Britt worked on Jr Staff during college! My in laws may be making their final trip this year- they are 89 and 90! Our family has cherished every year! We come from NC my daughters come from NYC and DC. Just booked their flights today! 32 years ago my husband made the best decision for us to celebrate our honeymoon at Sea Island!
Winter Park, FLOur wedding weekend at Sea Island in 2010 was absolutely a dream come true. Every detail was attended to by the Sea Island wedding team and we will never forget the care and effort that everyone took to make it so special. Eight years and three kids later, we look forward to coming back soon for a family vacation!
Spring, TXMy husband and I honeymooned at The Cloister at Sea Island in 1989. It was the first place that called me “Mrs. Potlock”. I was thrilled! My favorite memory of that magical trip was walking along the beach, holding hands, and drinking champagne, after having an incredible dinner. The sun was beginning to set. It was that beautiful pink golden light. The beach was gorgeous. As we neared our room, my new husband had gotten The Cloister staff to write “I LOVE JAMIE” in the sand in giant letters! It was so simple and romantic, and perfect! I will never forget feeling so loved and special at that moment. It was like something out of a movie!
Los Angeles, CAGrowing up in Buffalo, New York, every Easter vacation, my mom would pile us into the VW bus for the 2-day drive to Sea Island where my grandparents owned Cottage #39. To this day, I can still smell the air and feel the waves. Their house was very special because it had a ghost named Mr. Bacchus. He was friendly and would move through the house, opening doors and delighting me and my cousins, also gathered in Sea Island. My grandmother, Alyce, would sit quietly, not phased in the least, smoking her cigarette, long ash dangling, and say, "There he goes, Mr. Bacchus." There was no place in the world more magical than Sea Island to me and my three brothers.
Boynton Beach, FLWe have visited Sea Island as a family twice. Both times were unbelievably relaxing. However, my favorite memory of Sea Island is very simple. It is a sweet moment between my husband and our daughter Caroline watching a river dolphin swim by as the sun was setting.
Concord, NCMore SI memories than I can list: Swimming lessons with Percy! @ 4; Returning from Bingo to see albino deer at the end of 9th St @ 5; Holding my first LIVE crab on the dock of our 21st St rental @6; My first riding lessons at the Stables with Mr. Long @7; Winning Bingo and giving my $200 to my dad to save for my first horse @9; riding THAT horse on the beach at SI @13; My first dances at the Beach Club! My first New Years Eve dance @13; The worst sunburn EVER when I was on Jr. Staff!; Hosting friends on THEIR honeymoon at the welcome reception when I was on Jr. staff; my own honeymoon at SI and shooting at the gun club; Introducing my own children to SI-my son on Jr Staff; alfresco dinners; Sunday buffet Dancing with Daddy in the clubroom.
Peachtree Corners, GAGrowing up coming to Sea Island every year with family has made it a very special place for us. This past year, we planned a trip to Sea Island to both remember my wonderful mother and her love of the bagpipers at the Lodge, the walks on the beach, and meals at the Cloister and coupled all of that with announcing to our family and close friends that we were expecting a little girl who was just born this April! We can’t wait to continue the Sea Island tradition with our daughter and hope to bring her the joy that we felt on our trips over the years.
Lake Forest, ILMy family has been blessed to be coming here for 30+ years. A yearly tradition. My memories from the old dining room, the three nine hole golf courses, the lunch and seafood buffet at the beach club, the bingo nights as a kid and the Cloister camps. The old plantation supper which is now Ocean Forest, the rooms on the beach that we used to call home every spring / summer which is now where the new pools have been built. the last 8 years my kids have been able to take part in this yearly tradition. The third generation of our family to be able to enjoy all the amazing things that Sea island offers. All of these memories that I clearly remember from when I was a little kid is what make it so special. Memories that my kids will now make.
Macon, GAMy husband and I just celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary this past weekend at The Cloister at Sea Island. We were just two broke college students when we wed in May of 2004. Now, many years, several moves, multiple Air Force deployments and three beautiful children later we marvel at the blessings we’ve been given. This is the second anniversary we’ve spent at Sea Island and after another lovely supper, we went outside to gaze at the stars and realize how truly blessed we’ve been. Hoping for many more years together and hopefully more sweet anniversary evenings at Sea Island.
St. Simons Island, GAMY MEMORIES STRETCH FAR AND WIDE! From the original Cloister to the process of waiting for the remodel to finish and then the old beach club to the new beach club. I will always remember both the old and new Cloister/beach club as fondly as a Rainbow Island sunset!! Every Christmas walking the halls of Christmas trees, the ginger bread houses, and the beautiful decorations inside and out!! I have now been married and gained a step child. Last year was the first year we spent Christmas at the Cloister where I got to show my new husband and daughter the beauty of Christmas on Sea Island! The 90 year anniversary ginger bread houses had my whole family drooling! It will now be a tradition every year to make our appearance in December!
Mary & Rick
Atlanta, GAWe were married August 1973 and came to Sea Island for our honeymoon. On the 3rd night, we donned our recent rehearsal dinner best and went to the Beach Club for drinks on the patio before the Al Fresco dinner dance. After we were seated, a photographer came to our table and said "You are dressed perfectly for black and white photos. I'd like to buy you a drink and take your picture with that nice looking waitress.". We posed for45 minutes, pretending to sip long emptied cocktails. The photographer got our address and promised to send a copies of some of the pictures. Several weeks later we received glossies with a release to sign. A few months later, our picture appeared as the Sea Island ad and continued to be for the next 5+ years.
Columbus, INWatching my son make memories with his sons.
Frisco, TXTruly an amazing experience! We came to celebrate my birthday over my wife’s birthday weekend. This dinner made out trip! The level of attention, care, and food sets this place apart from the rest. This was the highlight of our trip and made it a commitment to come back every year at the same time. We can wait to experience this again!!!
Saint Louis, MOI am 41, I have roughly 40 seasons of Sea Island Memories. Big George is the constant, always greeting us as children and now greeting my own children. Herman in the old snack bar calling out our cottage when lunch was ready. Children's afternoon dancing in the clubrooms. To the lunch announcements made over the old beach clubs loud speakers, "the buffet lunch will now be served." As times have changed and buildings have changed there has been one constant, the faces. Big George is that example. But on a side note the new Cloister smells the way the original Cloister smelled. The new Beach Club may be different, but if you look closely the old Beach Club is there... Sea Island has so many memories for my family, but its the people!!
Kenosha, WIThe 17 hour drive is so worth it! Sea Island is the gateway to serenity. Whether it’s a long day at the beach club, listening to live music while playing cards at the bar or a humid night full of O 66’s and Tommy Tucker tunes. I have never felt as happy and relaxed as I do in Sea Island, Georgia. My husband, six children, and I are always anxiously awaiting the next trip for some rest and relaxation. But, though we abide in Wisconsin, we are always on SEA island time.
New Orleans, LAI have spent every summer of my life in Sea Island and now get to share summers and holidays with my husband and little girl there too. I could definitely list 90 reasons but here are just a few. We love coffee in the morning and cookies in the afternoon, we love that holidays are still magical and over the top on the happy isle, we love early morning bike rides and late afternoon drinks on the lawn during the golden hour, we love that every day can be different and easy, most of all...we love that sense of peace we get the minute we drive through those beautiful gates and over the bridge. It’s the happiest place on earth and we love making new memories every visit.
Bowling Green, KYGoing to see Billy Bingo with my dad!
Atlanta, GASea Island is such a special place to me. My whole family has loved it here for generations. It was my favorite place as a child, I married the love of my life here, and now bring my daughter to create new memories. One of my fondest memories was horseback riding. I remember the old stables when they were still off of Sea Island Drive. I'd love being at the stables going around to each horse to pet. One horse in particular I just adored. She was a young, very dark brown Arabian I was fortunate enough to ride. I remember galloping down the beach with my sister seeing dolphins pop up from the horses sound. It's something I'll never forget and hope to share with my daughter one day.
Montgomery, ALWe visited Sea Island each summer with our three sons. They loved golf, bisque, milk & cookies after Bingo, dressing for dinner, searching in the dark for sea turtle nests to hatch, breakfast buffet at the Beach Club, bike riding and so much more. Kitchen tours, quiet time in the library and solarium, shuffleboard, gold brick sundaes, pecan pie and those delicious macaroons after dinner. We’ve been blessed to return since our sons have married and now have Grandblessings to introduce to Sea Island life. It’s a magical place where a lifetime of good memories are made.
Fair Haven, NJI grew up going to Sea Island every Easter Break with my family. So many of my greatest childhood memories are from Sea Island and it holds a very special place in my heart. Every year my older sisters and I would go on walks along the beach, take bike rides down Sea Island Drive, eat goldbrick sundaes, and kayak alongside the dolphins. My mom and I would build sandcastles, and my dad and I would play in the pool. I know I speak for my entire family when I say that we can't wait to get back here and relive some of these fond memories. Sea Island is a place for families, but its the perfect place for mine.
Holly & Jerry
Landrum, SCWhy do we love Sea Island? Sea Island is the ONLY place, we believe, where our story could have had its incredible ending. It dates back to July of 1984, seven months after we were married, when my diamond wedding ring was lost after being placed in the safe in River House #232. Despite our loss, we continued to return to Sea Island, our “special” place, and stay in the same room, “our” room, #232. Ten years later, in February 1994, Jerry received a phone call from Sea Island Lost and Found. My ring had been found! The engineer who found the ring took it to Lost and Found, where a manager, who could have easily given up, continued to search, until a member of the housekeeping staff remembered the ring loss, in #232, of 10 years ago.
Ellicott City, MDMy family has always enjoyed visiting Sea Island every summer, occasionally Thanksgiving, and once for Spring Break. It has always been my dad’s and my favorite place in the world. This photo is from last summer on our favorite swing. Right outside of the hotel and hung from a giant Oak Tree. Every morning my dad would wake up before my mom and siblings and say “I’ll meet you at the swing before breakfast.” My grandpa always had an admiration for swings and I think that where my dad and I got it from. This is my favorite swing and I make sure to visit it every day I’m at Sea Island, it reminds me how beautiful the world is.
Hilton Head, SCCelebrating my Precious Mother’s 85th Birthday with my Sweet Sister ( born on my mothers 40th Birthday and Happy 13 year old niece who had never been any where as Elegant! My Mother has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and thought her world had ended! Sea Island upgraded us to a Beautiful suite with Champagne and balloons!! We could never have afforded this luxurious celebration but because my mother was born on Leap Year we enjoyed the leap year package! Thanks for such a Special Stay for Such a Special Lady!! We Love Sea Island and Wonderful Staff! Sea Island lives in our Family’s Heart forever!!
Oklahoma City, OKGosh, so so many wonderful memories! This is one pic of going to see if the sea turtles are hatching at night. From riding bikes, swimming, fishing, working out, kids club, dining, bingo, golfing, canoeing, sand dollar hunting, horseback riding, golf cart riding, the list goes on and on and on. I can’t describe the incredible people who work at Sea Island. EVERYONE makes you feel like family and home.
Chicago, ILComing to Sea Island every summer, with my husband and children is my most precious time of the year. Surrounded by my family brings me so much joy and happiness. Sea Island feels like home. Seeing Bruce smile makes me smile. One Year we saw sea turtles hatch and make their way to the ocean during the day which was amazing to witness. Last year we celebrated our daughter Jordan’s 18th birthday with a scavenger hunt spread out all over the property. No fun was spared, golf cart to drive us around from clue to clue, balloons, birthday banner and an out of control amazing dinner made by chef Robert. A huge chocolate chip skillet cookie, b-day cake and beautifully decorated turquoise cake stand to present Jordan with her b-day gift..magic!
VAWe brought our 12 year old granddaughter to celebrate her birthday at our favorite resort for her first time spent at a luxury resort. Everyone at The Cloister made her feel so special and all grown up - especially the staff of the Georgian Room. Thank you for making her birthday with us a lifetime best memory!
Tampa, FLEaster weekend 2013 was unusually chilly and wet. My family was not going to let the weather hamper their good times on the beach for our annual seine netting party. My brother, Paul, always ready for a good adventure refused to let the weather shake his optimism that he would find a few daring, seine fishing souls to bear the cold water. Without consideration, he rented 20 wetsuits from the dive shop and bribed a few good sports to walk the 100 yds into the ocean and pull in the seine net for what was sure to be the best catch ever. It Was! The kids went nuts over the tremendous heap of sealife treasure. The cold weather only aided the camaraderie of another great shared experience at Sea Island.
Medina, OHBecause we were not going to be with any children or grandchildren this past Christmas, we decided to spend a few days at The Cloister. My mood had been blue, but once we saw the beautiful decorations, relaxed in our beautiful room, and experienced the exquisite food, it truly became a merry Christmas.
Dallas, TXOver 30 years ago, I met some of my very best friends because they were willing to help me with my 1 year old triplets, 3 year old and 4 year old. They are from Virginia, Tennessee, New York, and Marthand. We have now met every summer since & our children have been in each other’s weddings, etc.. we still meet every August now that we are grandmothers.
West Hampton Beach, NYWe had the most magical family vacation at Sea Island. Each child had a different favorite spot from the beach club, to the pool, to the game room. My favorite was all the little flowered trails to giant chess games, bocce ball courts, coy ponds or scenic overlooks with welcoming chairs. We took in the sights and let our hair down. Drank in all of the southern charm and reconnected as a family. What I wouldn't give for a tea and cookie with them in the atrium right now. A deck of cards, birds chirping and the excited retellings of the mornings adventures.
Tallahassee, FLWe recently celebrated our tenth anniversary at The Cloister at Sea Island, and it was what vacation dreams are made of. As a native of the South you spend your life telling others on your travels, moves, run ins that you can’t duplicate the unique feeling that this area of the world leaves you with. One of rich food, soft breezes, bike rides, picturesque homes, comfort, sunsets, blooming jasmine, and most of all hospitality. That is how Sea Island feels. Like the best that the South has to offer, all in one sleepy island off the Georgia coast. Our memories here are incomparable. I have to imagine that for 90 years guests have felt just as special as we did during our stay. Left with memories that will keep me smiling for decades.
Vincennes, INREMEMBER THE RIVER HOUSE! We spent our August 1972 Honeymoon (we were honeymooners # 20,714 according to our welcome card from Irv Harned) at the River House (Room #228), and chose it for the next several visits, when we finally decided we could afford to stay at Retreat and Hamilton Houses, on the ocean. Now, when we sit at Tavola or on the Black Banks Terrace, we realize we are sitting where the River House was! We love the new Cloister, but how we wish we had a time machine to experience the River House again! And there are so many other memories at The Cloister since then.
Appleton, WIEscape to Italy with Tavola at the Cloister. Besides the amazing atmosphere, the beautiful resort and beach, and all the people and great service, the other reason why we keep coming beach is because of the food, especially at one of our favorite restaurants Tavola. Every time we eat there, more and more memories are made, not just of our vacation to Sea Island, but also memories made with our family. Make sure to ask for Ben at Tavola! Ciao, belli.
St. Simons Island, GAWe vacationed at my in-law’s 23rd St home each summer. Our girls rode ponies at the old stables as soon as they were able to sit in a saddle. As they grew up they spent time with Amy and the horses and we enjoyed beach rides. When my oldest daughter was 10, she was able ride bareback so we started to go on swim rides. We rode the horses out into the surf so they were swimming. On one ride we were fairly far from shore and we began to see fins. A school of dolphins joined us and were swimming around and between the horses. We actually felt the dolphin rub against our legs and the horses were unafraid. It was magical and peaceful to be so close with nature. My daughter and I cherish this amazing experience we shared at SI.
Gainesville, GAWhere to begin? We have so many wonderful memories of our summer visits to the Cloister! The beach club, bike rides on Sea Island Drive, the Jeep train, looking for sand dollars, putt putt tournaments, Bingo, dancing with our parents in the club rooms, milk and cookies , doing puzzles in the Colonial room, Sunday night buffets, 4th of July fun, Teen Dances...the list goes on. It was truly idyllic and I was very fortunate to share with my children when they were little. They will always be some of our favorite family memories!
Williamsburg, VATo calm myself I close my eyes and let my mind go back to 50 years of Sea Island memories. I was always aboard the jeep ride rides to the end of the island for shelling and of course Bingo was a highlight. The cinnamon cookies and milk always took the sting out of not winning. Standing on top of my Dad's feet, we would dance in the clubrooms after Bingo. I felt so grown-up! The Alfresco Dinner Dances around the pools at the Beach Club rank high in my memory bank as well. As an adult, I was lucky enough to introduce my children to all the wonders of Sea Island, but walking on the beach solving all the world's problems with my grandparents and parents will forever be my most cherished memory of Sea Island. I felt loved and safe.
Ft. Lauderdale, FLMy memories of Sea Island are unique because I have sadly never been there yet. Ironically, I find your website my "happy place" and I find serenity in planning a world class vacation for my family on weekends when I think, alast, this time we will actually make it there. For various reasons we have had to cancel over the years and once again the falconry and turtle walks have to be put on hold. Seeing my kids go crabbing or our family of four renting a golf cart slips thru as busy life and formalities of family obligations take precedence. For now, my favorite memories will be admiring your impressive website and I can continue to dream.
Atlanta, GAI really can’t remember a time when Sea Island wasn’t my favorite part of the year. We would pack up our station wagon, and all 5 people in my family would stay in one room in the Harrington House. That has since evolved to 21 family members (14 grandchildren!). We can’t all fit in one room of course- but we all come for one week every summer still! It’s everyones favorite week- biking, swimming, bingo, bunny spying, beach walks, goldbrick Sundays, crabbing, rainbow island, laughing and playing and just being together. I have endless Sea Island memories, but my favorite is marrying the love of my life in the Cloister Chapel. That chapel is sacred and gorgeous, and I love that I can now take my 4 young children back to where it all began.
Wilton, CTWe just returned from a weather-challeneged Spring Break at The Lodge. It was our first trip to Sea Island and we just couldn’t get over the incredible service at every turn. From Jim to Walt, to Buddy to Ike, they all went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was perfect. But more importantly, the service was so caring, personable and all-around lovely that we can’t wait to return. During a break in the unfortunate weather, we managed to sneak our young boys out onto the driving range. Watching the little loves of my life driving balls with their father against the backdrop of Sea Island will be etched in this mother’s mind for a very long time. A magical place for beautiful memories.
Simi Valley, SCIt was our first visit to Sea Island. It was warm spring afternoon and a wedding had just occurred on site. All the guests had left and our 2 year old daughter was frolicking in the rose pedals left on the cool grass left by the bride walking down the aisle. We saw your charming swing bench and decided to get a few shots of our daughter in pure joy as we let the rose pedals fall upon her. This is still one of our all-time favorite pictures, and it happened at Sea Island!
Athens, GASea Island has been a special place for my entire family since childhood, so naturally when I met my husband-to-be, we began to visit so I could share my “happy place” with him. We decided to get married at the old Cloister, and in 2000 we danced the night away with friends and family in the old beach club. Friends still tell me ours was the best wedding, with a 12-piece band and “crab cakes and shrimp as far as the eye could see!” When our son was born, we began a new generation of traditions, photographing him in the swing among the historic trees where we were married. Luke has grown up riding his bike in the 4th of July parade, hunting Easter eggs, yelling “Clickety Click Sixty-six!” with Billy Bingo. Sea Island is our family treasure.
Atlanta, GASpent a week in The St Simons suite on the river. We return for our annual anniversary week in November 2018. I can smell the oak wood now! Love Sea Island.
Watertown, CT65 years ago my parents Honeymooned at Sea Island Ga. In 2 weeks my Husband and I will be vacationing at Sea Island, staying in the Cloisters just like my Mom and Dad. So excited! Will have to take videos and compare it to my parents Honeymoon films!!
Roslyn, NYOur Happy Place: Sea Island is our Happy Place. Every year my family looks forward to that one magical week where there is only one thing to do and that’s have fun! I love how a quick walk leads you to pools, the ocean, a water slide, an arcade and the ice cream parlor! At night we love roasting s’mores over a fire and hearing the bagpipes blow or dressing up for Bingo where we laugh at bongos and cheer for bingos ... it’s more than Bingo! My favorite memory is when my son and I spent 3 hours in the ocean letting the waves knock us over. We were laughing so hard and just couldn’t stop our pretend fight against the waves. He was 6 then and he’s 9 now but every time the plane lands, the first thing he asks is when are we going to the Ocean?!
Arlington, TXWhen I stayed at Sea Island, something in my heart changed. I was serving as a nanny on this trip so I had little time to truly experience all the glory that Sea Island embodies. Each glimpse I got while leaving my hotel room made me feel whole. From the long hallway full of lush beauty, the sweet wedding in the courtyard, the chapel, and the constant smiling faces, I was hooked. I began to think up ways to stay out late and wake early just to soak in every moment I could. I took more pictures than I can truly explain just so I could reminisce for the next several years until I can return. I catch myself looking at those photos more than any others on my camera role. I cherish the time I had on the beautiful resort and dream of a return.
Marietta, GAWe have so many amazing memories visiting Sea Island! Some of our favorite memories are spending holidays at Sea Island. We love 4th of July when our family gathers to celebrate - great grandparents all the way down to the little ones. The parade is a must-do for our girls, pictured here in 2016 at 3 1/2 and 1 1/2. We look forward to it every year!
Pine Brook, NJMy family has been visiting Sea Island annually since 1983. My grandfather started the tradition, a retreat for our entire family including my great grandmother at the time, and we’ve been here every year since - and now I bring my own kids, four generations beyond the eldest from our original group. It is a Do Not Miss family week, with countless memories that live - Jeep train rides, BINGO wins, the swing, fishing contests, boat rides, sunsets, days spent at camp, nights spent in the formal Dining Room with five-course-meals every night, more buffets than I can count, afternoons spent gathered - every generation - in the pool, and so many more. Thank you Sea Island for bringing our family so much joy and laughter!
Mobile, ALWe had a wonderful time visiting family during Easter at Sea Island. From kite flying, horseback riding and swimming to rainy day movies at the theater, bike riding and a petting zoo. There are too many memories to chose from but this may be my favorite picture from Bingo night. What a great family friendly event and afterwards, small dance party!
Naperville, ILOur family has vacationed in Sea Island several times in the past years. While we love always experiencing something new on each visit, we also enjoy our traditions that we can’t miss out on each time we return. The biggest tradition for us is bingo. One year, our son, William, won the big jackpot! The moment Billy Bingo announced that Will was the big winner is a moment our son will never forget. In his own words, “It was the greatest moment of my life.” Bingo is an activity our entire family looks forward to every year. From “B-4.... and after”to Nilla Waifers and the electric slide, these traditions will never be forgotten and we cannot wait to experience them on our next visit. There truly is no place else in the world like Sea Island.
Ft. Lauderdale, FLThis snapshot of our two boys makes me so happy. They are carefree and unplugged- two states that we always seek to find and treasure in our time at Sea Island. And the reason we keep coming back and back and back!!!
Cream Ridge, NJIn April 2016 my husband James and I stayed at Sea island on our Georgia adventure. We visited Savannah (and named our daughter after the beautiful town there). The highlight was Sea Island. James surprised me with a horse ride on the beach. My horse, Woody, enjoyed the all you can eat buffet of the woods as we made our way with the group to get to the beach. It took the instructor and James on their horses to try and pull me out with Woody as he backed me into a bush! Walking on the beach with the soft sound of padded hoof prints pressing into the sand is something I will never forget. I had a stressful job and worries and being on that beach had everything melt away. I also felt like a princess eating in the Georgian room.
Sarasota, FLI had the pleasure of visiting Sea Island for Christmas 2016! It was a magical escape from reality and. The staff was amazing from start to finish. The food was like no other and the room was tucked away in the garden area giving us the privacy we needed. I hope to come back soon! And would love to enjoy this southern slice of heaven.
Sarasota, FLSo many wonderful memories and Christmas’s at the old and new Sea Island with my family. This one was a beautiful memory as I was about 15 in my long black dress feeling like a princess on Christmas with the whole family. Almost every year before dinner we would find a photographer and they would always place us in that same spot by the fireplace. I have so many photos from that same spot from various years, but this one is my favorite. Now sadly, my grandparents have passed on so these photos mean even more to my family. Thank you for supplying my family and myself with so many cherished memories.
Alpharetta, GAMy wife, Perrin, lost her father during Thanksgiving of 2014....it was not an easy loss for her and we decided to spend Christmas celebrating his life somewhere that was very special for both of us...we both agreed that one of our happiest memories was our honeymoon at Sea Island in 1978...that Christmas turned out to be one of our of our most memorable holidays and also our introduction to Room #15 at the Lodge, thanks to Relais & Chateau...Sea Island is very special to us and we feel very blessed to have such cherished memories ..we look forward and anticipate many more holidays with the folks at Sea Island..
Alpharetta, GAMy husband introduced me to Sea Island in my early 40’s.. growing up in NH all my life I’ve never experienced the magic I felt my first time on the island ... years later the island keeps us coming back annually... introducing our 3 children to Sea Island soon after our son was born that’s when the magic truly filled my heart. From the early mornings across the street from coffee at the Cloister to our little guy pushing his big yellow dump truck to the sandy beaches at the beach club.. to the afternoons filed with walks while he napped on daddy’s shoulder wrapped in bamboo blankets with the warm breeze blowing ... our older children biking all over! We will celebrate his 50th at the island, his choice over anyplace he wants to go. MAGIC
Olathe, KSGrowing up we visited Sea Island a number of times. My parents honeymooned there and they felt is was a great location to bring children due to the beauty but that it exposed us to formal dining and how to act as proper young ladies and gentlemen. When it was time for my brother, sister and I to be married, Sea Island was the logical choice for our Honeymoons as well. Although times and society have changed, the beauty and traditions of Sea Island continues. In he coming years there may well be a third generation of my family visiting for their honeymoon as well.
Charlotte, NCIn May 2017 we celebrated a huge milestone in our family and spent the week celebrating my in laws 50 wedding anniversary. We were thrilled that our 2 year old son was there as well to celebrate such a milestone with his grandparents. While the week itself was full of so many memories that we will never forget our favorite memory watching our son know exactly how to get to the courtyard to find Scout, the owl each AM! What a once in a lifetime memory to be able to greet and get so close to Scout when he was just a few weeks old. As you can tell by the excitement on his face even at two years old he nor the rest of the family will forget an experience like that week gave us! There is nothing better than making memories as a family at SI.
Simpsonville, SCSummer vacations as a child: days started at the beach club for breakfast with our favorite waitress Att—I remember the grape juice and fresh fruit for some reason. We would spend all day at the beach and pool only to be separated by a bicycle rental and and a ride all over the island. Lunch was always poolside after a game of ping pong in the gazebo with other kids. I remember at the time there were three diving boards we loved to jump from, one was a 3 meter that was always a thrill when I could muster the courage. Our days outside ended in order to get ready for dinner in the Georgian room and an evening of bingo with the family. We all loved the announcer who would say things like, “ O-clickety click, sixty-six!” and I-22 skadoooooo.”
Washington, DCI grew up with hundreds of incredible childhood memories from Sea Island including the Easter egg hunter, Fourth of July celebrations and learning to play golf. My parents had their honeymoon there and now my husband I celebrate our anniversaries there as well. Perhaps one of the most special is being able to go back year after year with my father and still enjoy playing golf together as much as we did on Day 1! I still cannot beat him, but it is much closer these days!
Farmington, MILast year I treated my niece to a surprise vacation to Sea Island. She thought it was a last minute endeavor but much to her surprise during our first dinner there she was greeted by the staff with congratulations. You see, she left home at the age of 17 determined to make a life for herself. She graduated from college last year with a degree in Computer Bioinformatics and is now pursuing her Masters Degree. She did not think it was a big deal but I had to impress upon her the exact opposite. She navigated many challenges and came out on the positive side of her journey. And the amazing thing the journey still continues. I wanted her to know she has to celebrate herself no matter how small or big the accomplishment. Plus we love her.
Macon, GAWe have started coming to Sea Island with our family each Labor Day for 2 years now and our 3rd Labor Day trip is already scheduled. My kids love riding in the golf cart over to the beach club and us adults love relaxing on the balcony at night with wine after we have put everyone to bed, we reminisce about the fun filled day at the pool and beach. It’s my favorite trip of the summer!!
Flowery Branch, GAMy husband and I have been making memories at Sea Island for years! This past Easter has become one of our most cherished memories as we took in all Sea Island had to offer surrounded by majestic oaks, sparkling water and our daughter, it was heaven on earth!
Savannah, GAMy first memory of The Cloister a boy in the late 40's, my mother, father, and older sister took a trip (from our residence in suburban Philadelphia) to Sea Island to spend some days at The Cloister. My father, a lawyer in Montgomery County, was involved in his hobby as a photographer. As a result, I have in possession his home movies he took in the 1930's and 1940's. In one movie it shows my sister walking in the courtyard garden of The Cloister. My father may have known Howard Coffin as my family is related to the Coffin family and both Howard Coffin and my father were Quakers. My father often would stay at establishments having Quaker ownership or Quaker influence. My wife, dog Smedley, and I always enjoy our visits to The Cloister!
Peachtree Corners, GASea Island was our annual vacation growing up, so it has always held a special place in my heart. Our trips later evolved to not only a spot for an amazing vacation and a place we could relax, but to where we would go to celebrate life's greatest moments. I am currently expecting our first child, a little girl to be born April 23rd, and Sea Island is where we announced to my dad that his only daughter would be giving him a grandchild! My mom passed away from breast cancer when I was 24 and Sea Island was the last trip she and I were able to go on together. We always stayed in the same room in the Cloister overlooking the Black Banks River and every time I come I try to get that room, as it holds some of my most cherished memories with her.
Coraopolis, PASea Island has been such a special place in our lives. With so many memorable visits over the past 30 years. My children both still feel like they are going to Disney when we say we are headed there for a little break. Our fondest memory is easy. In 1995 we were there for a summer week. It was the first time our oldest made the trip with us. She was 3 at the time. It was still the Sunday buffet in the old cloister ballroom and dinner every night in tie and jacket. It was special. Alexis attracted so many friends that week from the staff. "Marvin" would take Alexis EVERY night into the kitchen to see what they were cooking and our server Laura (georgian room now) still talks about that week. We love her dearly.
New Orleans, LAWe arrived at the Cloister on Sea Island just as an enormous storm was making its way through Florida and threatening the Atlantic Coast. We experienced a true “calm before the storm” as the Cloister continued to provide the grandest service and attention to every detail. The weather was gorgeous and the peacefulness we enjoyed was unprecedented by anything we had experienced before. We took the opportunity to photograph all the loveliness of the hotel and expansive grounds, swimming pools and beaches. We have never enjoyed a resort as much as we enjoyed the Cloister at Sea Island. We can’t wait to return.
Mount Prospect, ILIt was August 2010. On a perfect Georgia night, Tabitha and I took a walk along the Sea Island beach and I proposed to her. Sea Island is a magical place that will always be so very special to us and our family.
Sea Cliff, NYSea Island created a wonderful memory for my sister and I, as well as our 3 girls ages 16, 13, and 5. We celebrated my niece turning 13 in the middle of December and couldn't have had a nicer stay at Sea Island over the holidays. We marveled at the Gingerbread Homes and the gorgeous Christmas trees. The best part was meeting Santa up close and personal. And what a nice Santa he was! During the day we bonded while searching for shells and sand dollars walking along the picture perfect beach. We visited the Lodge as well to see more Christmas finery and collectively all wanted to move to Sea Island immediately. The whole trip felt magical and was a great girls getaway. Thank you Sea Island for the very happy memories.
Atlanta, GAAfter two years of courting me down in Sea island, my husband, Brand, proposed at the "old" Beach Club there in July of 2005! He grew up going to Sea Island since the late 70's and it's such a special place to he and his family. While dating, we spent many incredible times there. He proposed with a painting by friend and Atlanta artist Steve Penley - it was a painting of a fish I caught with an engagement ring on my finger. We celebrated that night and the beautiful Colt & Allison's restaurant at The Lodge, and have spent nearly every anniversary there over the last dozen years.
Longwood, FLI would absolutely Love to celebrate our 15 year marriage anniversary in Sea Island. When we stayed there we thought this place was magical. It’s so gorgeous, inviting, peaceful and the service, exceptional. It would be a dream come true!
Chicago, ILSome little girls dream of their wedding. For me, it was the honeymoon. It would be in Sea Island, cherished by my Chicago family as the prettiest spot on earth. Right after our 1978 wedding, Ed and I arrived, and he fell in love with S.I., too. We brought our boys, Mike and Jim, many summers, continuing the tradition. Little did we know, though, that one of the girls splashing in the pool could have been Lissy, who would later meet and marry Mike in Washington D.C. Now, Lissy and Mike, and their four kids, along with Uncle Jimmy and Nana and Pop all visit every summer. Often, members of our new Atlanta clan join us for a few days. Not just the prettiest spot, S.I. is a knot magically tying our expanded family.
Charlotte, NCOne July my family decided to book a photographer and get some family photos on the beach. As my sister's family took their family shots, my family waited in the wings for our turn. My two daughters played in the sand, and I prayed they stayed presentable in their matching dresses and bows. I knew they were getting tired of waiting, and so when they asked if they could stick their toes in the ocean, I let them. The draw of the Sea Island water was too great, and they ended up fully soaked, playing in the waves and swimming...fancy dresses and all! The photographer started taking photos of my two frolicking daughters, and we have the best photos of the girls from that day- laughing and playing and being the authentic kids they are.
Columbia, SCMy wife and I celebrated our honeymoon at Sea Island nearly four years ago. It was such a magical experience and we could not have imagined a better destination for our first week as a married couple. The staff did everything to make our time special and catered to our every need. We thoroughly enjoyed trying the restaurants, relaxing by the pool, going on a bike tour and just lounging in the luxurious room. We still talk about how the Georgian Room is the most elegant dining experience either of us have ever had! We fully intend to spend our fifth anniversary at Sea Island and every major anniversary from here on out. The attached photo was taken in the courtyard.
Birmingham, ALWe celebrated our daughter's 8th birthday at Sea Island last year. We started the morning of her actual birthday with the Sea Turtle Dawn Patrol where she got to "rescue" a baby sea turtle that did not make it out of the nest and help it to the ocean. She was so excited! We can't wait to return!
Columbus, GAI began coming to Sea Island in 1992. I was in 2nd grade. My favorite memory was swimming in the gigantic pool, and unlimited desserts at Sunday dinner in the main dining room. Fast forward to summer 2003 when I got to bring my boyfriend to Sea Island for the first time. My family rented a cottage, because we had outgrown a hotel room. I couldn't wait to rush him into the main hotel lobby to smell the amazing smell of The Cloister! Fast forward to 2008, when that boyfriend and I came to Sea Island on our honeymoon. Press the fast forward button to 2016 when we got to bring our 6 month old to the beach for the first time. We had a great time with our 18 month old last summer. We can't wait to come back this summer, too.
Nashville, TNI was about 10 at the time, so it was probably around 1966. I went out on a Beach Trail Ride - riding a Pinto named "Peanut"", and the ride was caught in a torrential thunderstorm after we had left the beach and were riding along the sand beside the road heading back to the (original) barn at the corner of Frederica and the Causeway. We all bolted for the barn, but there was a little girl about 6 or so on the ride with us. Her horse ran away with her, and one of the trail leaders and myself grabbed the reins of her horse to get it under control. Returned to the cottage (we rented Cottage #191, then) thoroughly wet and bursting with my story!
Nashville, TNAt some point back in the 40's - during the war years, my mother, Bobbie, would pack up her 2 daughters, and with her good friend Ann, and her children, would decamp to Sea Island in her Chrysler Desoto. Mother spoke fondly and sadly of 2 memories. One memory involved her education as a "bomber spotter" while at Sea Island. The other memory was how she and her friend Ann while walking the beach would occasionally run in to young men enjoying a brief respite from training at St. Mary's before going off to war. They would always offer to fix dinner for them, and it always saddened them to say goodbye afterwards - knowing these brave young men were about to leave, and possibly not return.
Windermere, FLThere are so many. My honeymoon at the old Riverhouse. Multiple anniversaries both before and after the renovations. Sea Island has been our happy place since 1997 and was a favorite respite for me since the late 1970s when I was first exposed to the island by a friend whose family owned a home there.
Saint Louis, MOMy husband and I came for an anniversary celebration about 15 years ago, Have been hoping to get back again sometime, beautiful property.
Lakeland, FLFor our honeymoon, we had to stay close by to our St. Augustine Beach wedding since my husband was in the middle of planning the inaugural football season at the college where he is athletic director. Three days was the most we could be away, so we chose the Cloister for its proximity. What we didn't know is that the people and the beauty would keep us coming back at least once a year since our honeymoon. And we squeezed in an extra night during our honeymoon because we could not bear to leave! The thoughtfulness and sincerity of the staff at the Cloister continues to amaze us. It is the gold standard wherever we travel. Below is a picture of us at Southern Tide where we enjoyed the seafood buffet on our "extra" night.
Bryn Mawr, PAOur first and only trip to sea island was last summer. Our visit was cut short due to the impending storm, but staff went out of their way to make us feel valued and safe. To this day, our now five year old says it was his favorite vacation ever!
Alpharetta, GASeeing the reflections of Sea Island in whom I am, the work I do and the Friends I have met that have forever changed my life and instilled a passion for me to come back year after year after year.
Greensboro, NCMy parents, Martin & Mary Rowell, who are both deceased, had their honeymoon at Sea Island in October of 1958. I had always dreamed of visiting Sea Island, and experiencing the world-renowned resort enjoyed by my parents on their big day. A few years ago, I treated my family to a very memorable vacation at Sea Island (Bingo!). While in the Hotel Lobby, I took a chance and asked the front desk if they kept Guest Registers from "way back when." A most helpful ambassador of the Hotel walked me across the lobby and found the 1958 Guest Register! Seeing my parent's actual signatures in the Guest Book, from 1958, was an awesome and emotional moment for me. Thank you for that incredible memory!!
Wesley Chapel, FLPlaying the "Amazing Race" with my entire family! It was truly an unforgettable experience and I can't stay enough about the staff that participated, organized and cheered us all on!
Chestnut Hill, MAWhen my daughter was little she use to wake up at the crack of dawn. I would take he down to the beach to watch the sunrise so we wouldn't wake up the rest of the house. We have seen many a gorgeous sunrise but this one August morning in particular was just spectacular. The clouds were reflecting perfectly in the tidal pools as she splashed around. I remember thinking what special moment it was and how many memories she was going to make right there on that beach. Luckily I had may camera with me to photograph the moment. It remains one of my favorite memories of Sea Island and quite frankly one of my favorite memories in general.
Mount Pleasant, SCNothing like a girls weekend for 40 somethings and trying to act like a kid again. Such a great place to unwind and have fun and relax!
Saint Louis, MOAs a child my family and I visited Sea Island every summer. Everything about it was amazing. I loved the food, the beach, the pools, the activities and the people. I enjoyed spending my days bouncing from the pool, to the beach, to lunch, to the tennis courts. I especially loved tie dye on the beach. It was such a fun activity and it was fun to wear my shirt back home until the next summer when I would make a new one.
New York, NYWe had a fabulous trip last May in Sea Island. My husband and I took our son, Jack there as a last vacation as a family of 3 as I was pregnant with my now 5 month old, Grant. We had such an amazing time! I would love to go back as a family of 4! It would mean so much to us as Grant was born really sick but he is doing amazing today. We would love to go back and celebrate as a family of 4. :)
Mulberry, FLMy favorite memories of Sea Island are riding on the beach with the horses with Horace as our guide. We have been coming every year for a few years now and make sure that we always book the beach ride. The beautiful beaches sell themselves. We never forget to bring our mini schnauzer, Jack. He loves the beaches too!
Bryn Mawr, PAWe celebrated our tenth anniversary at Sea Island in 1977 and returned 13 more times to homes, hotel and the Lodge. It has remained a favorite vacation place. And we are now married 50 years so we hope to visit again next year.
Smyrna, GAStarted coming to sea island since our children were 3 and 6 and now they are 16 and 13. The most fantastic place on earth! True paradise and I traveled all over the world and stayed at many beautiful places. We will never forget our sea turtle hatching night walks or bingo nights full of fun and humor, or our dance lessons with incredible English dance instructor or school of manners for kids. What can better than their thanksgiving dinners ? - nothing ! Everything there is done with class and tase. Bravo Sea Island - the little paradise on planet Earth!!
Spartanburg, SCReceiving an upgrade at The Lodge to a beautiful suite from which we could watch and listen to the bagpiper at the close of day. Absolutely memorable!
Nashville, TNLast year our son, two at the time, was obsessed with owls. I will never forget his face when he met Sea Island's newest owl.
IrelandOn your Emerald anniversary, and all the way from the Emerald Isle (Wicklow in Ireland), we remember our wedding in the Cloister and the Sea Island 5K on our fourth anniversary. While we are Irish, Sea Island in GA holds a very special place in our hearts, so much so that we have named our home Sea Island.
Auburn, ALSea Island is my favorite place, so it is hard to pick a favorite. As much as I love the food and the facilities, my fondest memories there have to be the walks on the beach that I take with my dad. We have had talks about friends, football, colleges, and of course the beautiful houses that line beach. I am so thankful that he brings my family back every year, and for the all the fond memories, even the simple ones, that Sea Island has provided to me and my family over the years.
Buffalo, NYA wonderful anniversary gift from our children. Such a gorgeous, unique get away. Wonderful escape from our cold Buffalo winter. Hanging in the hot tub in the rain was a blast ! Still remember the falcons accompanying our meal. So cool. Visited many beautiful places; Jekyll Island Club, the Wentworth Mansion, Richardson complex, but the Cloister has to be our favorite. Celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary this year and hope to return soon.
Easley, SCHoneymoon with wife Dean on Sea Island in January 2018. Stayed at beachside and enjoyed fine meals at Cloister. Beautiful architecture and great landscaping not to mention the fine service. Great time of year to good to Sea Island.
Charlotte, NCWe came to Sea Island usually during the month of July for many summers. We had 4 daughters who we worked hard to dressed up for dinner after a great day at the beach. Down at the Beach Club. Our favorite at the Lunch Buffet, Shrimp Salad! With hair done and big hair bows we entered the Beautiful dining room escorted by Winston for a delicious meal. We actually carried on family conversations back then. And to finish the day, on to family BINGO ( I 22: “ a couple of ducks” followed by the Bunny Hop”. We made so many Wonderful memories!
Griffin, GAI wish I had a picture of our daughter, Paige, sitting in a highchair in the hotel dining room singing to the waiters “just a bowl of butter beans“ !!! I guess this picture in the old Spanish lounge in front of that fabulous window will have to do.
Park Ridge, ILI celebrated my 70th birthday with my family on Sea Island. It was such an incredible and wonderful experience. My grandchildren still talk about it today, and hope that we consider retiring to this heaven on earth. My son-in-law, who has traveled to numerous five star resorts, was amazed at the level of professionalism shown by the staff and the exquisite rooms. It was a celebration that could not possibly have been more memorable. Thanks to all for making my special birthday an unforgettable event!!
Missouri City, TXMy best man and I smoke a cigar and drank whisky in lounge chairs outside of The Lodge while listening to a bag piper on my low-key, high-class bachelor weekend. Also unforgetable: those high pressure rain showers! We returned 1 year later to share in the experience with our wives (as seen in the picture).
Basking Ridge, NJI remember staying at Sea Island Georgia in Retreat House South on the top floor in about 1973-1974. Our family of four, including two children ages 4 and 6 always enjoyed breakfast on the deck outside our 2nd floor room. The breakfast was delivered and set up outdoors on the deck and a bird would always come and join us. The children just loved his company and we all looked forward to his arrival. We also made sure that we would go into the main building and visit with the parrot. My daughter also especially enjoyed the bubble gum ice cream and dressing for dinner. We also took the whole family to the Cloister about 14 years ago for my 60th birthday and we all had a great time. Recently, just two of us were guests several times.
Columbus, OHSpending my sons first Easter at Sea Island. It was a magical weekend that included a 5k family run, Easter egg hunts, tennis, pheasant hunting, amazing food and many trips to the beach. There was something for everyone to do that weekend and we will never forget it!
Mill Valley, CAWalking into our gorgeous room for the first time. The incredible service and friendly staff. Playing games in the lobby, swimming in the pool and enjoying the beach. It was all paradise!
Houston, TXA fabulous birthday celebration for me in June and also for my niece during spring break! Everything was perfect!
Charlotte, NCBabymoon 2016!
Atlanta, GAThere are many stellar memories for me: the beach, the ocean, the beauty of River House and the old Addison Mizner Cloister hotel, the beauty of the grounds with the scent of oleander and jasmine, the turtles and ducks. But my favorite memory is of formal dinner in the main dining room--the multi-course meal, the Sea Island Orchestra, and all the wonderful servers (employees) in that room working together to make a splendid, elegant and delicious dining experience. And somehow, they always knew our names!
Ridgeville, SCAfter finishing an afternoon round of golf last summer, my wife & I walked the grounds of the majestic Clubhouse & Lodge. We were in awe of the beauty & symbolism of the Sea Island clock and Old Glory standing side by side- both true American!
Peachtree Corners, GAMy wife, Julie, and I spent the weekend at The Lodge for our 5 year anniversary. Needless to say, the experience was amazing. The highlight of our trip was walking on the beach at the Cloister and opening an envelope which contained a single sheet of paper with the sentence “Congratulations! It’s a GIRL!”. I’ll never forget that moment and the shock I saw on my wife’s face...she had always been sure we were having a boy!
Hoboken, NJWe fell in love with The Cloisters in Sea Island, GA during our first visit and my now husband proposed to me during that trip (December 30, 2015). We hold Sea Island near and dear to our heart as it marks the beginning of our lives together. We now make sure to visit every year during Easter with family!
Jacksonville, FLWinning bingo the first time playing! And our kids saying it was the best vacation ever. Has made us make a Sea Island vacation an annual event.
Savannah, GAOur family has visited Sea Island several times a year for many subsequent years. There are many, many memories that we share from our experiences of fishing, horseback riding, walking on the beach, drinking lemonade in the atrium, playing games in the lobby area, being pampered at the world class spa, riding our bikes down the oak lined paths, and so many more. I can truly say that Sea Island is more then memories for our family, but a true FEELING of peacefulness, happiness, and a beauty of place and inner self that no other area can bring. We look forward to making many more memories in the future. Thank you , Sea Island!
Atlanta, GASwooning with my high school sweetheart at the end road in the late 60s and bumping into a deer on the way back.
Alpharetta, GAWhen I married in 1997, my fiancé had never been to The Cloister. He said we could go "anywhere in the world" for our Anniversary!! I had spent many holidays and vacations at "the most beautiful place in the world," and to me, that is, and always will be, Sea Island and The Cloister. He had never been to the Georgia coast and we had a fabulous honeymoon, including dance lessons, fishing trips, beach walks, and an oceanfront view from our room. It was the perfect experience and everything was 5 Star, just as it always was in my experience. Now that I have a Granddaughter, I want to introduce her to the magical Cloister and Sea Island. There is no where else in the world I would rather vacation!
Hilton Head, SCFirst, the service and people at Sea Island are unmatched. The staff addresses you by name and always have a smile on their face. My wife and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary at Sea Island. She was very impressed with the Spa and I enjoyed an incredible round of golf. When I picked her up from the spa she said, "I have fallen in love with this place". I fully agree.
Sarasota, FLGreat vacation - walking the beach and grounds, golf cart around, fish fry at the camp, etc.
Plumville, PAWhat first attracted us to Sea Island was an article about the resort in Southern Living. The idea of the kids participating in the camps run by Junior Staffers while giving us time for ourselves sounded great. The fun that our kids had at the camps is one of our favorite memories. After not being to Sea Island for 10 years, we took our grown children back this past May. The trip was a reminder of how much we loved everything. We ended up buying a share in the Cloister Ocean Residences and have been back four times since. We are looking forward to having many more wonderful times and memories at Sea Island.
Duluth, GAEVERY time I come to SEA ISLAND is memorable
Omaha, NEWhen you tell children in Nebraska they are going on vacation in Georgia, you probably get the same perplex look as you would if you tell children in Georgia they are going on vacation in Nebraska. The difference-Sea Island!! Trap Shooting, Kayaking, the Spa, Alligators, Armadillos, the Beach, hospitality like no other place. But the Best memory was a fabulous dinner dressed up with my family watching it downpour outside. Then the sky cleared for the most fabulous sunset. We rode bicycles through the damp streets talking and laughing. Time seems to fly when you are raising kids but somehow it stopped for a few hours on that island to make a lifetime of memories. We will see you again. The magic is too hard to resist.
Jamaica, NYThe family oriented and accommodation are lovely.
Boca Grande, FLWalking around the island with my dog , a Golden Retreiver. I encountered another person walking their Golden also The tow dogs nuzzled eachother nicely and as I chatted with the owner. As it turned out the owner was from the midwest and lived next door in Michigan to my prep school roommate who I had not seen in years The owner invited me in to her home and we called up my old pal and chatted The dog's owner and I have connected as friends whenever I stay at Sea Island.
Tipton, INWe, my husband and I along with our 3 boys (ages 13, 11, 7), travel to a different state each year since our youngest son Maverick was 2 years old. The Cloister was by far one of our favorites. The resort is amazing...our villa was superb. We rode bikes everyday, walked on the beach, went fishing, golfed, played in the pool, the shooting academy, and too many more memories to name. However, my favorite memory is when the kids went to "kids night out" and my husband and I had a magnificent 7 course dinner in The Georgian Room. Our server was amazing and we had the most unique dining experience. One of the best family events was BINGO. We all had a great such a great time! Every time I think of the Sea Island...I think of the Cloister!
Buffalo, NYWe chose Sea Island as our last vacation before our son was born. My wife, 7 months pregnant at the time, thought that pelicans were slow and timid. This one, on the front steps of the Inn, was way more friendly than she imagined!
Novi, MISeeing our 9 year old son, Michael, win Sea Island Bingo and also getting to go up and meet Ringo Bingo. What a smile on his face!
Colorado Springs, COI recently lost my mom in October. She was 94. Two years ago for her birthday we went to Sea Island. When I registered for us, I mentioned it was her birthday. Upon arrival the check in staff said happy birthday to you Mrs. Keiser. There was a beautiful bouquet of flowers delivered to her room. She loved them so much that she held them in her lap all the way back to Atlantic Beach, Florida. We had a wonderful time. Even though it was very hot that summer she enjoyed walking around the grounds. She had a spa treatment and we went to two of your restaurants. When you lose someone you love, what is left is memories. Thank you for some wonderful memories.
Riverview, FLWe spent three amazing days at Sea Island celebrating our dear friends 50th Birthday. Tons of memories, but our favorite was my husband teaching his 50 year old friend to shoot skeet! The staff was incredible! What a beautiful resort full of beautiful people! Thank you Sea Island
Gladstone, NJBest family vacation we have had! My son caught his first shark and my daughter caught her first crab!
Ann Arbor, MII went to Sea Island with my grandpa (Robert Bone) and my family for years (age 0 - 24/25). My grandpa owned a cottage and we rented others. I remember from a young age always walking into the club and seeing Big George, who may have been the biggest person I had ever seen in my whole life. But I still remember him being one of the kindest men I ever met; always so welcoming. I honeymooned with my wife 25+ years after I met Big George. After Sea Island renovated all of the old buildings and had the new club. When I walked into the new club the first day with my wife to go to the pool, I saw Big George's portrait inside the door and it brought back AMAZING memories. I had a lot of fun recounting memories of Big George to my wife.
Hilton Head, SCGolf and great dinners. Southern milk and cookies as a night time snack!
Fort Mill, SCWe have had so many great memories at Sea Island but our most cherished was being able to kayak down the river during low tide and experiencing the natural beauty of Sea Island.
Gilsum, NHMy favorite memory is dressing up to play Bingo. I love the hokey jokes, the lovely people we have sat with, and the possibility, still unrealized that I might win some money while having a terrific time.
Pittsburgh, PAMy first trip to SI was last Oct. 2017. We were so impressed with the simple acts of respect from all parties to my wife and I. Our breakfast place was outside -set up for us when we arrived each day. Very special and thoughtful. We never left the resort to eat in three days. Elegant charm was my best memory.
Atlanta, GAThe sweetest memories of Sea Island are when I go to the beach with my mom and see my friends from school. When I go to the candy shop and play on the playground and make new friends. I love going on bike rides throughout the island and love, love bingo night! I attended my dad's board meeting with Georgia Orthopedic Society and ran the 5k. Also, played in the mixed doubles annual tournament which is always a great time.
Largo, FLOur family has been going to Sea Island since I was about 6 months old. Every summer we visited the second week in August and made sure to book the following year before we left. Our whole family cherishes our memories in the main dining room - Linda singing Happy Birthday, finger bowls, Sunday Buffett and the band on the stage. I am one of 4 girls and we would pack the minivan to the brim with all of our dresses. Saturday and Wednesday evenings were the best and I will always cherish watching my dad getting dressed in his tux to take all his ladies to dinner and have our photos taken. I went on my mini-moon with my husband and it was the first trip we went on with my daughter this past January.
Aelxandria, VAMy parents drove my two brothers and me (in the pic below on our bikes) every summer from Dallas, TX to Sea Island, GA. 43 years later my husband and I make the drive from Alexandria VA with our four kids. Why? It's simple, there's no place like Sea Island. It's changed a lot over the years but it's never lost that special family feeling. It's a place where bike rides, BINGO, yummy beach club burgers, pool fun, and relaxing under a beach umbrella are all part of daily life. My kids love Sea Island too. I have many memories including those of my sea island wedding but one that stands out is when my older brother and I won back to back Bingos and how the "rowdy" sea island crowd actually boo'd me but in the nicest polite Sea Island way.
Duluth, GAMy wife and I attended a fantastic Downton Abbey weekend. Met cast member “Tom”. Soooo much fun.
Stone Mountain, GABirding on the wild and windy seashore in early December; spotting black skimmers and a variety of other seabirds. Then returning to the beautiful Black Banks river view room, sitting on the balcony with evening cocktails. Wonderful.
Buffalo, NYIts hard to pick just one recollection when you're fortunate enough as I am to have a lifetime of special Sea Island memories. There was the night my sister caught a frog and brought it into the old Cloister Dining room to the shock of all the diners. Or the time my little brother climbed in the Cloister courtyard fountain and scooped up all the coins to buy candy in the gift shop. My Dad loved bragging about me being the youngest person at the time to get a hole in one on Marsh Side. For me, its watching my kids make their own special memories whether its winning Bingo or shark fishing or celebrating a big birthday! My Dad and sister are gone now but their memory lives in our family photos and every time we come back to Sea Island.
Winston Salem, NCOn July fourth 1993 our two young daughters participated in the ping pong ball drop that was held on the beach in front of the old beach club. A single engine plane flew over the beach at a very low altitude and dropped hundreds of balls to the kids waiting below. The balls were different colors and many of the balls entitled the child to a prize that was handed out by the Junior staff members. A friend rushed over to us and said they thought our daughter Margaret, age 9 had won one of the big prizes. We hurried over to the line of kids waiting to redeem their prize and found Margaret holding a gold ball that entitled her to a free night in the Cloister. Just like Charlie in Willy Wonka she had the golden ticket. What a wonderful memory.
Greenwood, SCAlmost every year in the 80’s and 90’s my family would travel in June to The Cloister. I would attend dental courses given be Emory and Georgia Dental School there at The Cloister. We would all dance to the great beach shag bands of the 60’s and 70’s that played there, like The Impressions and General Johnson. It was there that I taught my three children to shag. My children learned how to use “finger bowls” and to use their table manners taught by their mother at dinner at The Cloister. We would have a family picture made before dinner that I still treasure today. We all enjoyed the beach and the pools, and loved the prepared lunch boxes that were given to us upon departing for home. These are just a few of the precious memories I have .
Virginia Beach, VAMy husband - daughter and I were staying at the lodge for a brief stay on our way to Florida - my daughter must have been about 6 yrs old. We were all sitting around our room - which was amazing - after listening to the bagpipes and having a wonderful dinner downstairs - when there was a knock at the door. I answered and it was the butler with rose peddles etc... I asked what this was all about and he stated that someone called and requested one of your rose peddle bathes. My daughter came running to the door and asked if that was her rose peddle bath - we all started to love so hard. She had called and requested this without our knowledge - but needless to say she had the best bath ever!!
Palm Coast, FLOn May 7, 2016, the love of my life proposed to me at Sea Island. He asked if I would like to go on a short romantic weekend getaway and, of course, I said I would love to. The first night there we ate at the restaurant at the resort and was seated at our own private table with wonderful servers. The next evening he wanted to go watch the sunset on the beach??? I kept asking why don't we watch the sunset on the river since the sun does not set on the beach lol. He continued to say he wanted to go to the beach. I knew why later. He had arranged for one of the staff at Sea Island to set up a blanket, rose pedals, champagne, and hors d'oeuvres on a blanket. Upon walking up to the blanket he stopped and got down on one knee and proposed!
Charlotte, NCMy Family went down every summer from the time I was born all the way through my teens. My favorite memory is the whole family getting dressed up and eating in the main dining room with the fantastic food and exceptional service. I learned great manners and what great food was being able to grow up going there.
Houston, TXMy son and I went to play golf at Spring Break a couple of years ago. When we first entered the Lodge we gave our names, from then on every employee we met called me Mr. Fama and called Tucker by name. He was very impressed. The Lodge remains one of our favorite locations. I could barely get him out of the rainhead shower. A down home wonderful experience. The golf was spectacular on all 3 courses also.
Matawan, NJSea Island holds an incredibly special place in my heart. Not only have I hosted a few meeting there with my firm, Pershing, a BNY Mellon company, my boyfriend and I had our first date there four years ago. We were highschool sweethearts and separated for close to twenty years before reconnecting and falling back in love. We've since returned twice and have always talked about getting married at Sea Island since it is the place where all the magic happened for us all over again. It is a truly magical place.
Woodstock, GAMy husband and I have spent many anniversaries at Sea Island, one of our favorite resorts. I don’t have a particular favorite, they have all been special. We are both golfers so we usually spend time pool side at the beach club or on the Golf course. We are celebrating our 30th anniversary this June.
Atlanta, GAThere is no memory like the memory for anyone who has ever experienced early evening with the Sea Island bagpiper walking down the fairway in front of The Lodge, with the graceful American Flag in the background....many times witnessed, and always a dramatic impression.
Atlanta, GAWe rented a cottage in May of 2015 to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. It was a perfect weather week for spending a lot of time on the beach which was only 200 yards from the cottage. Our son, an active duty USMC Aviator, his wife and our daughter rounded out our group of 5. It was great to get up each morning and hit the beach early to just admire the sky and waves with a cup of coffee. We hung out at the Beach Club most days for lunch and hit the Lodge a few times for the Bagpipper and the Sun set. Our most interesting adventure was the Friday afternoon cruise on the Cloister Belle. The Captain had 2 'helpers' onboard serving great food and drinks. They were both NCIS 'agents' from FLETC and most entertaining.
Lancaster, PAMy first trip with my wife, we visited at the end of August, and it was hot and humid, and we were worried it was going to be to much, but it was great! Hot, with a warm breeze, and we did everything... relaxed, sat at the beach, sat at the pool, rode bikes, walked, went to the spa, took gold lessons, got fitted for new golf clubs, play golf, had cocktails everywhere and ate at all the restaurants... it was a great 10 days!
Kinderhook, NYMy daughter and I celebrated her 30th birthday, and several thereafter with a golf trip to Sea Island and a stay at the Lodge. It was always during the summer months and in spite of the heat we played 2 rounds of golf a day. My daughter got an Eagle on a seaside par 4 hitting out of the rough on her second shot and it went plunk right into the hole. We're looking forward to celebrating her 40th birthday this year again with a stay at the resort.
Roswell, GAWonderful 28th anniversary celebration over the Christmas holidays!
Brentwood, TNIt’s very bittersweet to think of the 25 years of family visits, watching my children and grandchildren growing up, the family staying in every perfect place at the Cloister. What beautiful memories I cherish more than any others. However, one trip rests uppermost in my heart...summer of 2004...summer of my breast cancer. Our family vacation was in great jeopardy as was our family life. Then something amazing happened—-my doctor released me from radiation treatment a week early stating a visit to Sea Island would be the best medicine I could receive. It was. We came then and 14 years later are still coming. I’m not saying Sea Island cures cancer but it pretty much cures everything else.
Aiken, SCMy husband and I visited Sea Island several years ago...we stayed at The Lodge. While there were many great memories made, the most memorable would have to be the evening we sat outside and listened to the talented bagpiper play! The ocean behind him and the sunset were so overwhelmingly captured in my mind! I would love to go back and visit.
Garden City, NYMy 2 oldest children, my husband and myself came to sea island last year for our first time while we were awaiting the arrival of our third baby! I was 29 weeks pregnant and wanted to soak up as much quality time with my 4 year old daughter, 3 year old son and husband before life got even crazier. It was the trip it a lifetime!! We shared so much love and laughter on that trip. The kiddos absolutely loved the beach & swimming in the amazing pools and even having some poolside virgin “cocktails”. It was exactly the perfect trip we imagined. The kids were literally skipping around with pure joy the whole week and I think this photo perfectly reflects their carefree spirit. Thank you for giving us these forever memories! Back with baby 3 ASAP!
Wexford, PAOur four sons, ages 8, 6, 4,and 2 celebrated their birthdays with my husband and my anniversary during the summer of 1988!
Suwanee, GALast year I took my daughter's family to the Cloister and will never forget having 3 of my grand kids ( Liam then 7 , Cecelia then 4 and Vivian then 3 ) on my back as we played in the main pool ... absolutely heavenly !!! Cecelia told me that night " Poppy , this was the best day of my entire life !! " I have attached a picture of my wife, daughter and the " gbabies " from that day. I keep this photo on my desk and it always brings a smile to my face ....
Annapolis, MDWalking on the beach from our house on 33rd Street, smelling the Brunswick paper mill, watching the activity get closer and closer as I approached the Beach Club. Sunday diving for coins in the pool and watching the divers amuse us while sitting around the old beach club for dinner while they put on a show. And no one can forget Big George... Bingo nights waiting for them to call "double nickel" or "23 skidoo" and waiting for the band to start after bingo. New years Eve in the old club rooms where you knew everyone from last summer.... The 4th of July Celebrations and the fireworks in front of the beach club...There are too many to list!!
Leesburg, VAThe quality and attentiveness of the entire staff is second to none...we have been fortunate to travel to many nice places around the world and Sea Island is right up at the top of our list. I don't hesitate to suggest that friends and family consider staying at Sea Island ,The Lodge or The Cloisters. It's been top of our list from the first day that we stayed there. Keep up the excellent work.
Jupiter, FLEvery experience at Sea Island is its own treasured memory. That being said, the best and most important memory is my wedding day. My bride and I had the most wonderful week with our families leading up to our nuptials. The Sea Island wedding team and staff made sure we had the perfect wedding. We love Sea Island so much we stayed for our honeymoon in The Saint Simons suite and took advantage of all the amenities that the resort offers... everything from skeet shooting to horseback riding on the beach. The perfect wedding!
Commerce, GAMy husband and I visited Sea Island in January as our first get-a-way from our new baby! It was a romantic, beautiful and relaxing time for just the two of us! We sure did miss our little one but we plan to come back soon and bring him along! He is sure to love the beach club area!
Kingsport, TNOur Lake Cottage was lovely, our golf lessons were beneficial and in all was a wonderful experience!
Naples, FLSome of the most enjoyable golf and service I have ever had. Just an amazing place.
Wilkseboro, NCMy wife and I stayed at the Lodge at Sea Island in the Spring of 2017 and absolutely loved it. What a spectacular place for a vacation. I played golf on the beautiful course, and we took a day trip to the Cloisters one day, and that was awesome as well. What a magnificent venue, whether you stay at the Lodge or the Cloisters. We're in our mid-70's and it was one of the best vacations we've ever experienced.
Birmingham, ALI loved staying in the Hamilton House at the Beach Club for our honeymoon in 1987. We’d set the alarm to wake up each morning in time to watch a beautiful sunrise over the Atlantic. Then we’d go back to sleep until we were awakened by the delivery of our delicious breakfast some time later that morning. It was the most relaxing way to start our marriage. We returned last year to celebrate our 30th anniversary. We had another fabulous time at Sea Island!
Hermitage, PAWe loved the whole se island experience. We came for our 30th wedding anniversary. What an amazing resort and experience. So much fun with so many great options of things to do. One of our favorites was BINGO night. We laughed so much. Truly an enjoyable night for all ages. We were not sure what to expect but decided to try it and sure was glad we did. Can’t wait for a return visit.
Charlotte, NCMy fondest memory of Sea Island was getting married to my beautiful wife, Susan, at the Cloister on July 30, 2011. We reminisce about that day often, and our friends and families still talk about how it was the best wedding they ever attended! We have been fortunate to be able to return to Sea Island and the Cloister several times since then. Each time we manage to sneak into the Chapel, and stand by the altar looking into each other's eyes like we did nearly seven years ago!
Skaneateles, NYI go down every September with my brother and we play golf for three days straight. My fondest memory is the warm milk and cookies that would be delivered to our room within 1 minute of the designated time, we laughed about this every night on how accurate they were which goes to show the level of service and excellence that is Sea Island.
Orlando, FLMy husband and I were so happy to spend out 10 year Anniversary at Sea Island! We look forward to returning soon as I can’t think of anywhere I would rather vacation! Thank you for the memories.
Jacksonville, FLHave many memories of Sea Island from our daughter's beautiful wedding in 2009 but the first memory including all of us occurred at Christmas 1991. We had just moved back to the southeast and were newcomers to Florida....Jacksonville in particular. Our daughter's had asked Santa for bicycles for Christmas and were hoping that he would not forget since we were not actually in our new home but vacationing at The Cloister. We were all staying in Harrington House (and crossing all of our fingers), Santa did NOT FORGET!!! On Christmas morning the girls awakened to two bicycles in our hotel room and smiles and a few questions....how did Santa find us? Sea Island made it all happen and we not only came back but now own a vacation home on property!
Richard & Jean
South Bend, INSeveral of many - Many February's Jean & I would visit Sea Island for the Financial Seminars each year; great hospitality and accommodations, and especially seeing attendees in coats and ties for dinner - great tradition. Our best memory, however, was renting four condos for a Family Reunion - truly one of the best for 17 Dennens. Memories like that never fade, as our grandchildren today speak about that event as one of the best to remember.
Saint Louis, MOWe had wanted to come stay at The Cloister for some time (actually we had come for breakfast some years earlier) and finally did for my son's 21st birthday. He is a gorgeous non-verbal autistic guy and LOVES to travel and stay in the prettiest places only. We had a gorgeous suite and had a great experience. He took a fall at the pool and had to go to the ER and your staff couldn't have been more gracious - even driving us. He was fine and, although it was a dreadful experience, it was the kindness of your staff that helped us to continue having a lovely vacation once he was on the mend the next day.
Philadelphia, PA1950's Queen Juliana and the Prince coming to Sea Island and as a renter from Ohio with my parents Cy and Harriet living in cottage #26 , I think---I wrote her a letter welcoming her to Sea Island. A few days later I received a phone call from her private secretary saying she was too busy to stop by my house but thanked me for the invitation. I was 11 years old--- Of course Mr. Long picking us up in the jeep train on the way to the fish fry and hush puppies!!!
Belmont, MASerenity and understated grandeur.
Point Clear, ALMy husband and I spent our 25th Anniversary at The Lodge. It was our first time to Sea Island and the area and we had a wonderful time!! Played lots of golf and really enjoyed the course. Hopefully one day we can return and make more special memories.
Simpsonville, SCIt was our first visit there. The kids were amazed at how gorgeous the Lodge was - and how cool it was to have butler service. After a fabulous day of fun and delicious food (and s’mores by the fire), we asked for a rose petal bath for the girls…what a delightful treat for them to bathe like princesses. It’s a memory they have not forgotten!! Vacations at the Lodge then became our new “go to.” We’ve never been disappointed - our expectations have always been exceeded.
Somerset, KYI love this memory of me watching my new husband, enjoying our leisurely horseback ride on the beach at Sea Island, during our honeymoon.
Morristown, NJMy parents brought my brother and I as young boys to the Cloisters Hotel back around 1960. It was one of the most fun times we ever had as a family together. I don’t have any pictures and my parents are deceased, but I will never forget that trip!
Rochester, MAMy memory is walking down the aisle with a back drop of the ocean to the love of my life, saying our vows as sea islands own bill borrows initiated our marriage. With my closest family and friends, sea island became a part of all of our hearts. From the phenomenal staff who made my dream wedding happen, to the most dream like location, sea island is a true slice of heaven on earth. Never have I felt so welcomed as I did on sea island. When I picture the best day of my life, I can smell the salt water air, feel the breeze on my face, and hear the laugher of the guests on the island. Sea island will always have my heart! As a resident of Michigan, I saw it in a magazine and knew I had to get married there! would love to return!
Montgomery, ALI grew up on St Simons in very humble surroundings. As a kid, I remember tree houses in tall live oaks , where I could climb and see the ocean. It was an adventure fueled by the vast imagination of a young boy. My best friend 's father was the Activities Director at the Cloister Hotel. Occasionally, I would go with my friends to the Cloister. We would play on the beach and enjoy a lunch from the magnificent buffet...more food than I could ever imagine! On one of these visits, we met Mr Perry Como. My friend and I met his family and played with his children on the beach. This early memory of fun on the beach with my best friend and the children of a well known celebrity at the wonderful Cloister Hotel has stayed with me for 68 years.
Atlanta, GAMy wife and I were married at the St. Regis in Atlanta. We loved our chef and we were delighted to learn that he had moved to Sea Island as the head chef. We have stayed in contact via email and asked for him to assist in an anniversary dinner for us during one of our stays in Sea Island. We were delighted when Jonathan Jerusalmy actually created a masterpiece for us on our 5th anniversary in the formal dining room. The food and the service were excellent. We were so grateful to have that experience with him.
Fairfield, CTMy fondest memory of Sea Island is not surprisingly my first memory: the anticipation as we drove across the causeway to begin our first ever visit to Sea Island. As will be no surprise to you, the reality of our stay exceeded our imaginations, which was a tall order. Thank you, Sea Island.
Kissimmee, FLWhen we think of Sea Island, of course, we think of the beautiful trees, lush landscaping, glorious walks on the beach, shelling, love birds, and wonderful friendly staff. However, a very fond memory is watching the children enjoy feeding the turtles in the old, original "turtle pond." The children would giggle and point at the turtles swimming and nudging each other. Thank you for many sweet and lovely memories.
Oreland, PACelebrating our 50th wedding anniversary November 2017 with dinner in the Georgian Room!
Boston, MAI have so many great Sea Island memories, but one that sticks out is surprising my mother for her 60th birthday. My dad told her that it would be a trip for just them. My mom was so excited because she loves SI and has been going for years, but she had no idea that me and my sisters, along with their husbands and kids were all coming. My dad rented a house and we were all at the house with a huge "happy 60th" banner. My mom's favorite thing to do is to drive down Sea Island drive so my father did that with her. As she came up to the house we rented, we were all outside holding the banner. My mother was shocked! At first she didn't know it was us and seemed confused. My mom was so happy to celebrate her birthday with all of us.
New Canaan, CTNew Years celebration with our family the past two years. While newcomers to Sea Island we feel welcomed as though we’ve been coming here for years. As our children grow we hope to continue this tradition and hopefully with our children’s children.
Terrace Park, OHMy favorite memory is after a great week making memories as a family, my husband gives me the gift of a week at Sea Island by myself. I can workout when I want, read, eat, walk the beach - all on my own schedule. I always send photos from the beach that I write in the sand. It’s the perfect way to rejuvenate and set goals for the coming year. I’m always so thankful for Sea Island.
Knoxville, TNAmazing time with our 9 year old daughter. Watching her take tennis lessons, horseback and fishing. Wonderful time had by all.
Fairhaven, NJThere are so many! The peach pizza and s’mores dessert at Tavola, the breakfast buffet at Southern Tide, the gold brick topping on my ice cream, the fine steak bday dinner at Colt and Allison, to name a few. The one I decided to highlight was the kitchen tour I took with my daughters Avery and Molly. We tasted the yummy cookies that were all too familiar from the afternoon snack at the Cloister and observed the values of the kitchen and the vision and mission of Sea Island overall. We love our time at Sea Island. Our children would never want to vacation anywhere else. It is truly our favorite place on earth!
Basking Ridge, NCMy wife and I had honeymooned on Sea Island during September of 2012. Nine months later, our beautiful daughter, Georgia Anne, was born.
Williamsburg, VAWe celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at the Cloister, in a corner "butler" suite on 3rd floor, overlooking the river and the Marshes of Glen. A staff member met us at our car and took us directly to our suite. What an impressive welcome to a place we had long wanted to go, but never had! We had breakfast every morning in our rooms by the windows overlooking that amazing view, something I will never forget. I was north Georgia born and bred, married a military officer and traveled the world. Always in the back of my mind was my dream of someday going to the Cloister at Sea Island. Finally, in 2008, we arrived and had an unforgettable anniversary celebration. We loved it so much, we returned in 2010 and again in 2012.
Littleton, COWe were married in 1955 and we spent our honeymoon at The Cloister. I remember our room - 312, which overlooked the fountain in the courtyard. We have gone back most years and always asked for, and most times got room 312 until the Old Cloister was demolished. Always have wonderful times.
Atlanta, GAMy wife Meg and I got married in November of 2002. When we came for our honeymoon, our flight was delayed. I will never forget what happened when we arrived. My wife and I were treated to a "private" dinner in the main dining room of the original Cloister. The wait staff, kitchen, and even the musician stayed late just for us. When the Cloister was torn down, we got one of the small silver flower vases that used to sit on the tables in the main dining room so that we would never forget the experience. We have been back several times since and even shared the story with our three children after having been married 15 years now.
Valdosta, GAOur first stay on sea island was approximately three years ago in mid December. We had a great time watching the dog show and enjoying the Christmas festivities at the resort. My kids still talk about how ‘cool’ the dog show was. Cheers, Eric.
North Attleboro, MAAll of my happy moments at sea island involve my family. Little would I have dreamed that the long weekend stay at sea island would evolve into happy vacations with my sisters and brothers, I have been fortunate to bring my children over the years. When I retired last June from art education my husband and children gifted me a very special gift - a stay at sea Island- with my Grandchildren! How blessed! Happy Anniversary!
Prospect, KYWe celebrated my husband’s birthday with our children and grandkids. We had a delicious catered dinner at the lovely home we rented. Beautiful vacation in June.
Andover, MAI visited the Island and stayed at your hotel for the first time in 2014. To me, I felt like a princess. Such a beautiful place. Manicured grounds were breathtaking and the staff was just wonderful and very caring in their mannerism whether it was the hotel staff or beach staff. The entire time of my stay was perfect and I felt so special and privileged to be at your hotel and enjoy the experience of this wonderful Island. It was definitely something out of a picture book where dreams come true.
Atlanta, GAI have many fond memories from our trips to Sea Island. Our favorite place to have dinner is on the Lodge property. Our sons enjoy listening to the bagpiper, having a wonderful dinner and then roasting marshmallows for Smores after. This particular trip they were able to enjoy this experience with their cousins, which made this moment so much more memorable.
Saratoga Springs, NYAs a 10 year old in 1968, I caught a nice sized flounder off of the fishing dock. The person at the dock house brought me in to the kitchen and we asked the chef if he would cook that up for me at dinner. He did and he made a big deal out of it by serving to me at the table himself. What a thrill and so delicious.
Anchorage, AKWalking on the beach past the breakwater and watching the osprey.
Jacksonville, FLHad a wonderful weekend at Sea Island for our 40th Anniversary. The staff treated us royally and it seemed that everyone new that this was our special day. We biked around the island, had glorious meals and felt oh so special. Our 50th is coming up. Certainly will consider another visit.
Atlanta, GAIt was this past summer, July 11th, and we made a detour on our way from Ft. Lauderdale to Atlanta at The Cloister. It was my 56th birthday and my twins were 12. Like me, the twins have never met a stranger. Upon our arrival at the pool they met numerous children also from Atlanta and I never saw them for hours. Our 24 hour stay became a 48 hour stay and they have now convinced me it should be our tradition to spend all of my birthday at Sea Island!
Tampa, FLThe entire Sea Island community offers so much for families...from relaxing at the spa, fishing, kids club, bagpipes and s’mores at the golf course, to the amazing collection of restaurants...it is impossible to single out just one memory. However, the family memories made have to top my list. It’s our favorite spot to vacation.
Terry & Fred

Wilmington, NCMy daughter Caroline has been taken lessons with the instructors at the Performance Center since 2013 when she was 12 years old. Our lasting memory happened in 2017 when she had the opportunity to practice and workout with PGA Tour Professionals while they tried to recruit (soft sell) her to go to college at their alma mater. Such fun!!!
Spartanburg, SCI sent my wife and daughter to the Cloister to celebrate my daughter's birthday. Had a wonderful time!
New Orleans, LAAfter having visited Sea Island since I was 2 over the last 38 years, my wife and I decided to plan a visit to celebrate our 10th anniversary in October. The staff could not have made our stay any more memorable from check in, to dinners, to the spa, everyone went above and beyond. The memory that really was so special to us was at dinner we selected a bottle of wine and the sommelier instead brought the same wine from 2007, our wedding year, to help us celebrate. Such a memorable and thoughtful gesture that reminded us why Sea Island is such a special place to us.
Nashville, TNThe first time our son saw the ocean was during our trip in 2016 to Sea Island. We decided instead of a party, to take our first family vacation for his birthday. It was a wonderful celebration of the past year and our first trip to Sea Island. We have since gone back every year and plan to make a summer vacation at Sea Island a long-standing family tradition.
Houston, TXOur fabulous Thanksgiving vacation at Sea Island was one to remember...from the amazing resort, pools, homes and actives one of our favorite activities not to miss was Bingo! We did not win that night so my hope is that we will be lucky this time around....and be able to return for another wonderful adventure!
St. Simons Island, GAA fond memory I have of Sea Island is actually not my own memory, but it is one that has made Sea Island a deep part our family history. My mom and dad used to love coming to this place from their hometown in Thomson, GA. With a 5 year old, 2 year old and one on the way, my dad wanted to take the family on one last vacation before becoming a family of 5. I have a picture of my dad, my 2 sisters, and my mom, 8 months pregnant with me sitting on a fig leaf ivy covered railing. This trip to Sea Island was very special b/c 2 weeks later my dad died in a plane crash. This was their special place. We have continued the tradition my dad so loved my coming back every year. Now, living on SSI, I get to continue the tradition with my own kids.
New York, NYGrowing up, I would take friends down to Sea Island every summer for the last hoorah before school started. Summer going into sophomore year of high school, one of my friends developed a mutual crush with a Sea Island lifeguard. He came to Bingo with my family, and we spent A LOT of time at the diving pool. My friend said goodbye before we drove back to Memphis in my mom's minivan. We all asked if she had kissed the lifeguard, and she said "no." We all told her that she would regret not kissing the lifeguard, so my mom did a U-turn on Sea Island drive. We all cheered as my friend ran up and had her first kiss with the Sea Island lifeguard outside of the old beach club! It's definitely a memory none of us will every forget!
Savannah, GAMy wife and I honeymooned at Sea Island in 2011, and the best part was, we got to bring our dogs. Our older Chihuahua, Rita, had gotten sick right before our wedding, and we were really anxious about leaving her behind for the week of our honeymoon. At the last minute, we decided to call Sea Island, and ask if we could bring her and our younger Chihuahua, Tico, and you said yes! What a relief to be able to keep her close that whole week, and make sure she was all right.
Bryn Mawr, PAThe best-ever for a family vacation. After 46 yrs of marriage, my husband and I spent our first holiday at home without our children and grandchildren. We chose the golf house for Thanksgiving and visited three times in less than three weeks. Jim welcomed out two spaniels and we feel like we are members of a very loving family . Many thanks to Chef Dan for his personal touch!
Corona Del Mar, CAFirst time visit with two of my daughters. Magical place with Gorgeous grounds. And oh those oak trees. The hotel is like stepping back in time to a romantic and privileged period. The staff was wonderful as was the food and accommodations Can’t wait to come back.
St. Simons Island, GAMy grandmother Ruth Singleton loved wearing glamorous dresses for evenings of dancing at the old cloister hotel in the 50s and 60s... This holiday season I honored her memory as I danced the night away in one of her dresses in the new ballroom of the hotel... She would have been so proud. ❤️
St. Simons Island, GA I was excited when my boyfriend Evan arranged for us to enjoy drinks at The Lodge to listen to the bagpiper play at sunset. It's such a beautiful tradition! We were meeting friends and decided to wait on the lawn for them to arrive. As we walked onto the 10th green, Evan pulled away and dropped to one knee. I hardly remember what he said as he proposed, but I must have said, "Yes!" because everyone around started cheering when he put the ring on my hand. The Oak Room had champagne waiting when we came inside, and we toasted with everyone that came through the door. The moment was perfect, and perfectly captured at one of the most majestic destinations in the world! Sea Island will always hold a special place in our lives.
Needham, MAOur first trip to Sea Island was last summer. After having a wonderful dinner at the Lodge and hearing the bagpipes, we went back to the river and watched the sunset with a lightning storm approaching. Great pictures and memories with my wife and 3 kids. First family vacation in 5 years. We cannot wait to go Back to Sea Island.
New York, NYWhile walking along the most spectacular beach, I was able to fully embrace the awesome responsibility that was going to be bestowed upon me; becoming a father! My wife and I chose Sea Island as our Baby Moon destination due to reputation, location and activity offerings. Winning the Thanksgiving Bingo jackpot was fantastic, enjoying meals at some of the finest restaurants in our United States, spending afternoons in the magnificent spa and enjoying sitting by the fireplace all paled in comparison to the moment that the beach at Sea Island provided me. My wife and I talk often about returning to Sea Island so that now we can enjoy its Majesty as a family of three.
Somerset, NJAlthough it has been 10 years since my first and only visit to Sea Island, whenever I am asked what is my favorite vacation or my dream vacation destination today, I've always said, Sea Island. Why? because of the pristine beauty, absolute tranquility and warmth, and the place that made me fall in love with golf that have remained a constant reminder of my experience and memory of my visit to Sea Island.
Dallas, TXWhen we were little and would go for two weeks every summer, the first thing we’d do was go rent our bikes, meet up with our friends who came the same time we did every year and play bike tag all over the island. Then we’d go eat grilled cheeses and drink milkshakes at the old beach club, swim, and play ping pong in the gazebo.
Merrick, NYSea Island holds a special place in my heart. My husband proposed to me at the restaurant on the golf course. We are married 6 years, together 8 years, and our most memorable moments were at times at the hotel. Especially for this northerner, we experienced southern hospitality at its finest.
Atlanta, GACelebrating my honeymoon (on this day 3/21) and 25th wedding anniversary with my lovely bride Jessica, who was also on Junior Staff in the 80s.
Germantown, TNBy the sea... We hosted a memorable wedding weekend at Sea Island in August of 2014. 263 friends and family began arriving on Thursday for Memphis BBQ and Bingo at our home followed by a night on the town. Friday was fishing, golf and a Bridesmaid sun in the fun day at the Adult Pool cabanas hosted by dear family friends. The Rehearsal dinner was at the Beach Club followed by a Post Toast. The wedding was at St. Simon's Presbyterian Church where we had worshiped as a family since the 1980's. Following pictures at the Avenue of the Oaks, the Cloister Ballroom was transformed with a petal bar, light wall and a band reveal. It was the best night ever thanks to Kacee and Elizabeth. We are forever grateful for the memories.
Lexington, MAI used Sea Island as the location to get engaged to my wife in December of 2014. We made a promise to come back every year - which we have kept and just returned from a wonderful time in February. It is a magical place for us - and as I describe it to people - it is truly a slice of heaven.
Cincinatti, OHI remember walking the grounds and being completely surprised by the beauty of the grounds and how engaged the staff was in making our stay so enjoyable. I hadn't seen a Bingo game like the one we saw for years. It was amazing to observe.
Huntersville, NCI have so many that it's hard to pick just one! One of my favorite memories is last year in 2017 we visited to celebrate our 10 year Wedding Anniversary. The trip was made even more special because we were able to bring our 3 children with us. One evening when we were walking back to our room, our 7 year old son realized he had lost his tooth! We walked around and retraced our steps but couldn't find the tooth. He was so upset because he didn't think the Tooth Fairy would find him in Sea Island and there wasn't a tooth to leave under his pillow. Of course he was delighted the next morning when he woke up and realized the Tooth Fairy did in fact find him there and even left him $2. He declared that Sea Island was the best place in the world!
Vero Beach, FLI had an unforgettable week at Sea Island with my daughter and 2grandchildren last July. The following picture shows my daughter very relaxed! I had a canvas made with this picture with the following: Life is about balance. And Wine. And balancing wine.
Amityville, NYMy wife's parents who both have passed away, had their honeymoon at the Cloister on Sea Island in 1949. My wife Cathy always wanted to visit so I surprised her with a trip to the Cloister. When sitting in the lobby she found books of old wedding and honeymoon pictures. All of a sudden I saw she was crying. She had found an old picture of her Mother and Father. For her it was a magical, heart warming experience and what a great memory she will have forever.
Greenwich, CTWe booked our first August visit this past summer last minute. Perfect mix of activities and rest for three generations- classic Sea Island. Maybe a new tradition?!
Peachtree City, GASitting on the porch at the Lodge, having cheese straws and a glass of wine while listening to the bag piper on a balmy summer evening.
St. Simons Island, GASea Island and The Cloister will always hold a special place in our hearts. The Cloister Spanish Lounge and Solarium is where we celebrated the beginning of our married life together among our family and friends in August of 1991.
Great Neck, NYWhen I was still actively practicing OB-GYN my wife and I came to Sea Island every year (24} to the "Masters In Gynecology "course at the Cloister , moderated by the giant physician and gracious master , Dr. John Thompson. One of the features of each afternoon's golf was the yearly " I beat Louise Suggs " contest on a par 3 on Plantation. Louise was long before our contact with her, a charter member of the LPGA Hall of Fame, legend in golf and its Founder. It was as I remember it, 140 yards and the first time all of us tried to "beat" her shot she used a 7 iron, and there were around 6 to 8 who "beat" her and got a trophy. 20 years later Louse hit a 4 iron . Her accuracy did not diminish, as no more than 8 in our group "beat" her.
Sea Island, GAThe forth of July events at the old Beach Club. Diving for vegetables, the ladies putting bananas int their bras !!! This was a blast. Also the sandcastle contest, our family won one. The drop of ping pong balls by a small plane, I still have some.
Mount Prospect, ILThere are many fantastic memories from Sea Island- from my first visit as a teen to my wedding in April 2016. However, what I have loved most was when I took my now husband to Sea Island for the very first time. He had heard all the stories about visiting over spring break, my love for the beautiful oak trees and the way the staff made you feel like family during our stay. He was able to see The Lodge and beautiful golf courses his favorite PGA players practice on and the amazing wildlife (including turtles!) which live on the island and call the place home. We ate, drank and were merry at the beach club (where I were decided to have our reception). There is nothing more exciting than being able to witness someone's first visit!
Conover, NCSaturday night bingo with my wife dressed to the nines celebrating our anniversary.
Atlanta, GAFor over twenty years I brought down from Atlanta, the GA SECURITIES DEALERS for our mid winter meetings. The Fridaybnight cocktail parties, the golf and tennis and the Sunday night dinner at the beach club, where we awarded the GA BUSINESS MAN OF THE YEAR award. The Monday morning check out with our boxed lunches. The beauty of the beaches and the smell of flowers trying to awaken from their long naps. I miss all that and so much more.
Longwood, FLMy husband and I, together with our four daughters, celebrated the Millennium at Sea Island. It was a memorable stay. We spent our days doing what we loved to do... biking and running to the end of the island, working out in the spa gym, and walking on the beach. New Years Eve we danced the night away and into January 1, 2000. Then, at the dawn of the first day of the new Millennium, as the sun began to rise and show itself on the horizon, our children ran into the water to greet the dawn... the first day of the new century. Their joy and awe in welcoming New Years Day 2000 is a memory I cannot forget.
Chicago, ILWe celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary here, which was lovely. We enjoyed it so much that last year we returned to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday. We had an amazing dinner at Colt and Alison. While the hotel is undeniably extraordinary, it is the warm and caring staff that takes this incredible setting to the next level. Our waitstaff was everything you could hope for in a celebration dinner. We were treated like royalty, and just could not have had a better experience. When you get older, you sometimes get very nostalgic leaving a place, because you realize you might not be back in your lifetime. With Sea Island, we were not sad because we know we have plans for many return visits!
Marlborough, MAWe have such fond memories of our stay at the Lodge about a year ago. It was the most romantic time we have ever had ! It was both of our birthdays and we wanted to celebrate it in a grand way and it was grand alright ! The views were breathtaking, the room, fantastic, and the golf spectacular. From the butler, to the items placed in the room for our birthdays when we arrived that were specially done for us were so thoughtful ! We were so pleased with the staff from the Lodge staff to the Pro shop and even the grounds crew. I cannot say enough about Sea Island. We tell everyone we know to go there. When we can afford it, we will be back ! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you :)
Wake Forest, NCMy wife and I visited on our 10th anniversary from North Carolina. We had drinks as the sunset, relaxed by the pool during the day. Best vacation ever.

Evening dining will be available at Colt & Alison and the Oak Room, and the bagpiper will continue to play from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. each evening. Please check our other properties for availability.
