Flying the Secret Sky: The Story of the RAF Ferry Command with William VanDerKloot

Flying the Secret Sky: The Story of the RAF Ferry Command with William VanDerKloot

Friday, February 23, 5:30 p.m.
The Cloister Clubroom

Filmmaker William VanDerKloot grew up hearing his father make occasional references to Sir Winston Churchill around the supper table. It wasn’t until 6th grade, when his class was asked to bring in WWII memorabilia from home, that he fully understood what his father did during the war.  A photo of Churchill, signed “To Captain VanDerKloot, with fond memories of Commando” astounded the teacher, in part because his father was an American civilian.

Delving into his father’s wartime career, he learned that his father was part of a secret mission involving hundreds of civilian and military flyers who risked their lives while pioneering global air routes. That mission was the RAF Ferry Command, which delivered tens of thousands of American-built bombers to the UK during the war’s darkest hour.

VanDerKloot will discuss how he traced his father’s footsteps and flight paths, and will share clips from his documentary film, Flying the Secret Sky: The Story of the RAF Ferry Command.
