Sea Island is re-opening its guest resort operations with Cottage rentals on June 5, The Lodge on June 10, and The Cloister on June 11!

From the moment the doors of The Cloister opened in 1928, Sea Island has been known for its gracious hospitality and heartfelt service. Today, Sea Island continues to be the only resort in the world to receive four Forbes Five-Star awards for 12 consecutive years. However, we aren’t resting on our laurels.

If you haven’t visited us recently, you are in for a treat as we have made many enhancements over the past two years, including a complete redesign of the Plantation Course, a 17,000 square-foot Golf Performance Center and Sea Strike, our new Bowling Alley and Pub. Our ocean breezes, five miles of private beach, acres of beautiful natural settings and a plethora of outdoor activities are waiting for you.

Service Begins

Many of the traditions we have been sharing over the past weeks have evolved along with changes in our facilities. A new Beach Club, for example, and redesigned Plantation golf course. But one tradition – and the one we are best known for – has not changed at all. Gracious hospitality provided by a warm, genuine staff has epitomized Sea Island since the doors of The Cloister opened in 1928. A Quarter Century Club was begun in 1953 to recognize the 11 team members who had delivered gracious hospitality since the first year The Cloister opened. The old adage that “the more things change, the more they stay the same” continues to ring true at Sea Island, from the early days with a friendly bell staff to The Lodge butlers of today.

The Welcomes Continue

Since its opening day in 2001, butlers have served guests at The Lodge. When guests arrive, a butler meets them at the front door and, if it’s their first time staying with us, they are given an orientation tour. In addition to providing an overview of The Lodge and its amenities, they also touch on special services available 24 hours a day. Operating around the clock, these butlers truly get to know the guests who stay at The Lodge. “They’re really like family,” says Buddy Adams, who has served as a butler there for the last 17 years. And speaking of family, there are currently over 100 active team members in our Sea Island Quarter Century family, ranging from 25 years to more than 50 years of service.

Inspired by the traditional profile of Walter Travis’ 1928 original nine-hole course, the new Plantation Course is receiving rave reviews after a complete redesign by Davis and Mark Love of Love Golf Design.

Blueberry Buttermilk Tart

Nothing says "welcome" like a fresh-baked dessert. And with blueberries in season, there's never been a better time to whip one up.

Makes one 8-inch tart

Tart Dough

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 egg yolk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt

View Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, cream together butter and powdered sugar. Add egg yolk and vanilla. Mix well and scrape down the sides.
  2. Add flour and salt, and mix until combined. Form dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°. On a floured work surface, roll dough to 1/8 inch thick and place into an 8-inch greased fluted tart pan. Fill with pie weights and parbake shell for 8 minutes.

Tart Filling

3/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
Pinch salt
2 eggs
3 egg yolks
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon butter, melted
1 cup fresh blueberries
Corn syrup

  1. Preheat oven to 325°. Whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
  2. Whisk eggs and egg yolks into the sugar and cornstarch mixture. Whisk in buttermilk, heavy cream, and melted butter.
  3. Pour filling into tart shell. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until middle of the tart is set. Once tart is completely cool, toss blueberries in a small amount of corn syrup for shine and arrange on the top of the tart.
