SEA ISLAND GOLF CLUB The internationally renowned golf experience that is offered at Sea Island Golf Club is the culmination of a fervent commitment to excellence, passion and respect for the game which has been nurtured over the past 95 years. It’s a history, in fact, that mirrors the growth of golf in the United States, and it’s studded with the names of golf’s greatest architects and players. Walter Travis’ Plantation Course, a nine-hole configuration, opened to much acclaim in the summer of 1927. This auspicious beginning put Sea Island on the fast track to becoming a world-class resort and golf destination. Cloister founder Howard Coffin chose the renowned London firm of Colt & Alison to design the second nine holes. The firm’s accomplishments were already legendary and included original and renovative work at Pine Valley, Rye and St. Andrews. Since Colt & Alison’s style was refined compared to Travis’ designs, the firm also reworked Travis’ original nine so the resulting 18 holes would be a seamless and graceful configuration. When completed in 1929, the two nines could be played as an 18-hole course – the first nine was still called Plantation, and the second nine was given the name Seaside. Word spread fast about the excellent quality of the two courses and the pleasant weather of the Sea Island area, which made golf playable year-round. Golf enthusiasts came in droves; Robert Tyre (Bobby) Jones, Jr. praised Seaside as “one of the best nine holes I have ever seen.” Grantland Rice included the course with Pebble Beach, Winged Foot, Pinehurst and National in a filmed portrait of the best golf courses in America. In 1959, Dick Wilson completed the Retreat Nine, and fourteen years later, Joe Lee added the Marshside Nine. Players were then able to select any two of the four nines (Seaside, Plantation, Retreat and Marshside) for an 18-hole round. Sea Island’s four nine-hole courses have now been forged into two separate and complete 18-hole courses. Rees Jones took the work of Travis and Wilson and produced Plantation, a classic style course with a similar flavor in 1998. The following year, Tom Fazio took the brilliance of Colt and Alison’s original design at Seaside and Joe Lee’s Marshside and molded them with his own contemporary insights into today’s Seaside. 2019 saw the grand reopening of the Mark and Davis Love III redesigned Plantation Course. In 2001, Davis Love III turned the former Island Club course into Retreat, the third course comprising Sea Island Golf Club. At Sea Island Golf Club, Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead and Davis Love III, who represents Sea Island as its touring professional, are the four consecutive record holders. Throughout the years, Sea Island has hosted eight USGA Championships.
