Calling all explorers! Embark on an unforgettable adventure to become a certified Sea Island Raptor Ranger. This immersive experience is designed for young adventurers, aged 12 and under, interested in a unique opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of birds of prey. RANGERS REPORTING FOR DUTY

Young rangers will be guided by a Sea Island falconer. They will encounter raptors such as hawks, falcons or owls while learning about their features, behavior and ecological significance. From soaring through the sky to patiently waiting for opportunity, these birds exhibit incredible skills and strategies that have captivated humans for centuries, and kids will learn more about them from an expert such as Master Falconer Paige Frost.

One of the highlights of the Raptor Ranger program is the opportunity to interact with these magnificent birds up close. Young rangers will have the chance to hold a trained raptor on a gloved arm, feeling the power and grace of these creatures firsthand. “This kids-only program is structured to present information in a fun, exciting way, and tailored specifically to each group,” says Frost. With that in mind, no two experiences will likely be exactly the same. This hands-on experience is not only exciting but also educational, allowing participants to observe the bird and appreciate its beauty.

LESSONS TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL

In addition to raptor encounters, the program offers a variety of engaging activities designed to deepen understanding and inspire a lifelong love of nature. Young rangers will participate in interactive learning sessions, where they can ask questions and share observations. They’ll also engage in creative activities, such as bird-themed crafts and art projects, which allow them to express their creativity and reinforce their learning. Think handmade masks, found-object artwork and for the older kids, an interactive obstacle course.

Beyond the hands-on experiences and educational activities, the Raptor Ranger program also instills a sense of environmental stewardship. Young rangers will learn about the importance of raptor conservation. “Sea Island has a strong presence in protecting our natural areas, especially when combined with our naturalist program. There are many birds of prey in this area, so I’m excited to show members and guests something new that’s just for kids,” says Frost.

By the end of the program, young rangers will have gained an appreciation for birds of prey and a foundation in coastal science. Additionally, they will have earned a well-deserved Raptor Ranger badge, a reminder of their unforgettable experiences and inspiring them to continue exploring the natural world.

OWL-LOT OF FAMILY FUN

For smaller tykes not yet ready to become rangers, they can join Frost along with Scout, the Eurasian Eagle Owl, in the Solarium for complimentary storytime. Here, Frost reads aloud one of several books while Scout keeps a close watch nearby. “The entire family can come to see this big owl and learn some about him and other birds too,” she says.

Each of these programs is a new offering to the falconry experience at Sea Island. Adults can participate in other falconry activities such as the Hawk Walk, where a trained Harris Hawk will glide across the sandy trail before landing to claim a much-deserved reward.
