Sipping the unmatched flavors of unique single-barrel spirits

By: EMMA REYNOLDS

In the world of premium spirits, single-barrel expressions are gaining unprecedented popularity among connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike. These unique spirits, which are sourced from individual aging barrels, offer a one-of-a-kind tasting experience that stands out from the typical blends found on store shelves. The allure lies in their limited quantities and distinctive flavors, making them highly sought after by enthusiasts seeking something truly special.

Single-barrel spirits provide a deeper connection to the art of distilling. Unlike the standard practice of blending multiple barrels to achieve a uniform taste, each single-barrel expression captures the essence of its individual barrel, resulting in a complex and nuanced profile. This trend has been embraced by distilleries and bars around the world, as it allows for greater creativity and a more personalized drinking experience.

Carl Rhodes, Lead Bartender at River Bar and Lounge, explains the enduring appeal behind seeking these rare gems: “Single-barrel expressions showcase the essence of the house style while possessing unique attributes that make them stand out. The limited number of bottles from each barrel adds to their exclusivity and appeal. The microclimate of each barrel influences the aging process, resulting in spirits that are complex, nuanced and exceptional.”

In collaboration with famed spirits houses, Sea Island has grown it’s exclusive collection from three single-barrel spirit programs to upwards of 15, with more on the way. Of the Sea Island single-barrel selections, Blanton’s, Weller Reserve, WhistlePig Piggyback Rye, Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace are some of the most sought after among members and guests.

NO TWO BARRELS ARE THE SAME

The flavor profile of a single-barrel spirit can vary significantly based on the barrel’s location and the weather conditions during aging. This unique aging process differentiates single-barrel spirits from small-batch spirits, which are crafted by blending multiple single barrels to create a consistent expression.

“While everyday bottles of spirits combine multiple barrels to maintain the house style and taste,” Rhodes explains, “single-barrel expressions are able to distinguish themselves with exceptional characteristics.”

The resort’s beverage team visits distilleries all around the world to sample and choose the best expressions for their program to match their guests’ unique flavor preferences. “We know which flavors our most popular, so purchasing barrels with those flavor profiles in mind is key to the program’s success,” says Nic Wallace, Resort Bars and Spirits Manager at Sea Island.

Once a single-barrel expression runs out, it cannot be exactly replicated, as there are subtle nuances in its flavor profile. “Each barrel, often made of American oak, imparts unique flavors and aromas, making every batch distinct,” Rhodes notes.

These premium products can be enjoyed neat or in cocktails, depending on the spirit. Whiskey remains a top choice among enthusiasts, but single-barrel tequila, gin and rum are also gaining traction as brands experiment with innovative flavors and aging techniques. The premium tequila market, in particular, has surged recently, driven by celebrity brands and evolving consumer tastes.

BARRELS OF FUN

The resort’s private label spirits collection allows the team to explore their creativity. Wallace aims to source single-barrel bourbons with unique styles, often using rare barrel practices.

“We’re always looking to push the boundaries and bring something truly extraordinary to our guests,” Wallace explains. This approach involves experimenting with aging single-barrel tequilas in diverse barrels, from used whiskey barrels to exotic Colombian oak. This process not only imparts unique flavors but also ensures an unparalleled tasting experience.

One of the standout practices at Sea Island includes sending their used bourbon barrels to partner distilleries for aging new single-barrel tequilas. This innovative method results in spirits with layers of complex flavors that are both distinctive and exclusive to Sea Island. “This collaborative approach enhances our program, offering guests a taste of something they won’t find anywhere else,” Wallace adds.

Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or new to the world of premium spirits, the growing trend of single-barrel expressions offers an exciting opportunity to explore unique and complex flavors. With limited quantities and ever-changing selections, each tasting is a fresh adventure, making the hunt for the perfect pour all the more rewarding.

SOLE KING

Glass | Double Rocks      ICE | 2” Cube       Garnish | Lemon Curl and one Parsley Sprig

  • 1 oz Brown butter washed Eagle Rare 10 Year Bourbon
  • 1 oz Foro Amaro
  • 1 oz Black pepper and lemon infused Dolin Rouge
  • 2 dashes Dale Degroff’s Pimento Bitters

METHOD
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass over ice. Stir for 6 to 7 seconds, then strain over a single 2-inch ice cube and garnish.

NOTES
The special ingredient is the brown butter washed bourbon. To make it, start by melting down and browning 6 liquid ounces of unsalted butter, and brown it on a stove top. Remove solids from the liquified browned butter. Combine liquid browned butter into a clean 32 ounce container with one full bottle of bourbon and seal the container. Shake the ingredients together and store in the refrigerator overnight for infusion. The browned butter will solidify at the top of the container overnight.

Punch a small hole in the top of the solid butter “disk” at the top of the container. Finally, strain off the liquid and store in the refrigerator for use.
